Re: A wild Nile in Africa..(Video)

Great videos. What are the birds making the repetitive sounds in the last video? Do they always make that sound, or were they responding to the presence of the monitor lizard?

Those were Yellow-billed Hornbills, very common in the Mpumalanga region. They are always singing like that so no it was not the monitor that caused it.

Re: A wild Nile in Africa..(Video)

I love yellow-billed hornbills. I did an illustration of one for a book, many years ago.

I'm familiar with the local birds and the sounds they make here in Australia, so when I hear one making an unusual, repeating call it is usually a distress or warning call and worth checking out. More often than not heading to the source of the sound will reveal a monitor lizard on the ground below the birds (or climbing the tree). That's why I'd asked about the sounds in the video.

I'm not at all familiar with the sounds of African birds although, judging by the background sounds in your videos, they're every bit as weird as the ones in Australia - a far cry (pun intended) from the 'tweets' I grew up with in Canada!

Yes, Jarich (and thanks!). It's an acrylic painting on illustration board. In one of my previous careers/lives I was a wildlife illustrator for a good number of years.

Sing.

I even have to mime in the shower so I don't frighten the neighbours.

Oh, I sing, but never where someone might hear me. That restricts me to singing in my car while driving on my own down the freeway (but even then with the windows rolled up, just in case).

Boooring! Who cares if you suck? In fact, horrible vocals are trendy now. It's called "scene".

Wildlife illustrator! That helps to explain your incredible patience with sitting there waiting for the monitors to come out.

OMG! ROFL! Wow, I can't believe you just said that. Gotta be one of the funnier things I've heard about "scene".

Your drawing is spot on, beautiful.

We recorded them in the tree right after the monitor disappeared. They are very vocal.

Will have to wait for Wayne to fix the video link again.
