ask your vet to take swabs of the windpipe and have them cultured to see if they can isolate the exact infection your snake has

up your hot end temperature by 4 degree's this helps the snakes immune system

the throat puffing like a frog is just your snake trying to breath i would'nt worry too much as its common with respiritory infections

how long did your baytril treatment go on for ?

cheers shaun

Re: I need help!!

acctualy my vet took swabs of both my snakes when i went thats why im soo mad. the results showed that my female, who had and still has no symptoms had two different bacteria, and there for was put on antibiotics different from baytril for two weeks. mt male, the one i am worried about, his results showed nothing :s the baytril was given before the results got in and i had 7 shots to give.(one every 3 days) I think the vet might have mixed the swabs?? anyway i have an app on monday.. i just hope that i can fix this prob asap because i really dont want to loose my baby :S i will keep u guys posted!

your vet uses different dose rates re baytril

over here i use 2.5% stregnth oral baytril

0.2 per kg of body wieght is a weak dose

0.4ml per kg body wieght is a strong dose

i give 0.4ml per kg of body wieght every second day

minimum treatment legnth is 4 weeks

it works out theres 25mg per 1ml of baytril

if it was a really really bad infection i would give 0.4 per kg every 24 hours but i've never had to do that yet

i'm thinking your vet may not have treated the infection for a long enough time period

did your boa appear to get better when on the treatment ?

cheers shaun

Re: I need help!!

If tvhe vet mixed the samples it is their error, they should pay for any additional treatments. Hope he gets better for you soon.

Re: I need help!!

The medicine your vet gave that started with an "A" is probably Amikacin. This is an excellent broad-spectrum antibiotic that doesn't have the tissue damaging effects that Baytril does. However, and I don't know if your vet explained this to you, but if it is Amikacin, it is very dehydrating and can be hard on the kidneys. Therefore you need to do a daily soak for 15 minutes in warm water (about 93 degrees F) in a Rubbermaid of some sort to keep the heat and steam in. Best of luck. I would see about finding a new vet- for the vet to mix up the swabs and not think through the mix-up (Well, he has a very sick snake that the swab is clean from, and a perfectly healthy snake showing two bacteria...wonder if I mixed them up?) says to me that he's not a very careful or analytical vet. NOT someone I'd let near my animals. I had a vet overdose one of my snakes with Baytril and she seized and died after two doses. The vet refused to take responsibility and kept coming up with other things it could have been, even though the respiratory infection had not caused seizure until 4 hours after the Baytril was given? I never went back to that place and now have a vet that I trust. Sometimes you have to go through a few vets before you find a really good one. Best of luck with your snake; I hope the vet gave you the new meds for free and a free appointment for his screw-up causing you trouble!

Re: I need help!!

Hi bo2as. Sorry you're going through this. Is there a Quebec reptile club/forum who's members you could ask about vet recommendations? Here's a link to a list of vets I found - not sure which all deal with exotics, which are close enough to you and if there's any duplicates to the list Steph linked. It may even be worth it to see if you could at least talk to another experienced vet over the phone and get their opinion on the situation. And, perhaps for now you should try some soaks as Willow mentioned. Best wishes and hope you have good news for us soon.
