Re: My reptile care site

Sorry to point this out to you, but I was not really enthralled by your site. The design is OK, but the content ranges from questionable over outdated to completely wrong more often than not.

Re: Sea snake killed 4 teens in 1962 - any clue on what species?

This is very doubtful. There are no sea snakes in the Atlantic ocean, they are distributed in the tropical Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, most of them close to coastal waters in South east Asia...

New update about my Spilotes sulphureus enclosure

The new enclosure is up and running for nearly two months now, so time for an update. I will add a link to the original post at the end.

New bioactive themed enclosure for Spilotes sulphureus

Finally – my new enclosure for my yellow-bellied puffing snake (Spilotes sulphureus) was delivered in March. There were many delays, some miscommunication and misunderstandings, so it took much...

Multispecies enclosure – Spilotes pullatus and frogs

As some of you might remember :D, I keep a pair of tiger rat snakes (Spilotes pullatus) and a trio of dyeing dart frogs (Dendrobates tinctorius) in a large bioactive enclosure. I add links to a more...

Re: Driving from CA to FL

Get yourself a Styrofoam (polystyrene) box which is big enough for your snake. Put the snake into a cloth bag (if it is small enough a sock would do nicely, otherwise a pillowcase), secure the...

Re: Question on heating a tall enclosure

OK, so if you use the Arcadia Forest light you have a good source for natural daylight and UVB. Believe me if I tell you that I know what you are talking about, I live in an attic flat (without A/C)...

Re: Question on heating a tall enclosure

That’s a good sized enclosure for your Russian rat snake. I don’t have any personal experience with this species, but have talked about keeping them with several very experienced keepers some time...

Re: Lighting

You are very welcome!

When the first UVB lights came into production, some had a problem and produced levels of UVB (and even UVC) which were dangerous and harmful for the animals. These flaws are...

Re: Lighting

Gee, thanks for inviting me Craig :)

Hello Carlota, nice to meet another European member in this forum. In my opinion and after reading (a lot) of papers about this subject “light” in particular...

Re: Wild-caught vs. Captive-bred

I just wanted to point out that breeding reptiles is not something new, but you are right of course, the amount of CB animals today is much higher as it was 20 or 30 years ago, so I certainly don’t...

Re: Wild-caught vs. Captive-bred

This is not a simple “Yes” or “No” question. In general, we should try to restrict ourselves to CB animals. If the species is bred in large (enough) numbers it makes no sense to catch them in the...

Re: Cohabitating different species

Just because you haven’t heard about something it is “strange”? I could understand if you call it “unusual”, because it is, but to call something strange has a negative connotation. And frankly, I...

Re: Cohabitating different species

As far as I know they are "normals" and that's what I wanted, no fancy coloration the snakes would no longer recognize as a warning. I cohabitat them for three months now.

What's strange??

Re: Atheris chlorechis care, enclosure, info please help

I have to agree with Craig, I don’t think that handling a snake a few times is enough to qualify you as a venomous keeper. So please really reconsider your decision.

For Atheris chlorechis is...

Andy: I was talking to Dr. Frances Baines and Roman Muryns during a conference in May for (literally) hours about this whole topic lighting and it’s consequences for our reptiles. That was when she...

Re: how long to leave lights on

I think it is a just one of those things we all “know”. It is repeated in most care guides that snakes don’t need UVB since they get their D3 from their food. Results from research suggesting...

Re: how long to leave lights on

If you define “snakes don’t need UVB” as “they can survive without it for an extended period of time” you are right, but actually there are several studies telling a different story.

I...

Re: how long to leave lights on

I disagree with Craig in this instance, we had this discussion before, so I don’t think it is necessary to start it all over again. I will just point out why I use light in all my enclosures and you...
