Dumeril's monitors?

I haven't found much info on these guys so any keepers chime in!!

Any info appreciated!!

I am looking to either get a sav in the future or maybe on of these guys if their care is similar.

So here is a pic.

They love their mud, that's for sure.

Re: Dumeril's monitors?

my favourite monitor.

but i believe their care is different than the Savannah monitor. they need much more humidity 80%+ and some climbing space.

Re: Dumeril's monitors?

From what I understand the care is similar to a Savannah, except that they need more climbing space and slightly higher humidity. I believe they also enjoy having a water area at least big enough to submerge in.

One of the nice things about monitors is that the care doesn't vary much across the board. The same basic cage design will work for many species, with only slight modifications if any. Really the biggest difference is size.

Re: Dumeril's monitors?

I asked the same question months ago, and didn't receive much response either.

Re: Dumeril's monitors?

Adding onto varanusmad.
Seem to like crawfish, fish, and rodents. probably looking at a 8x4x6 (LxWxH) enclosure.
Going to take more work then a sav (not that I would ever suggest a sav). Will enjoy leaf litter on substrate.

Re: Dumeril's monitors?

Well I have all ready have my enclosure design if I were to get a sav it would be 8x4/12x4.

I realty just wanted to see if I could make a compatible comparison between bosc's and these dums. Thanks for the replies every one.

I would like to get a sav in the next year or two so I can do my research and get my adult enclosure started.

Re: Dumeril's monitors?

Hello, I keep 4 of these lil beautys. Adding to the things already mentioned I have found they are way more arboreal, burrow more, bathe more and like it very very humid.
Consequently they need a taller enclosure than Savs with a very large pool when adult. Be warned if you decide to keep these guys you will constantly be doing water changes as they like fill the pool with soil/sand etc.
They are far from fussy eaters but they do go mad for prawns, shrimp freshwater fish etc along with the usual cricket/locusts pinkies.
Personally I would have a Dum over Savs any day but they are more prone to keeper error than say a Sav. Will sort you out some links later but heres some pics (everyone likes pics)
