post shed Oracle (pic heavy)

oracle just shed today. wasn't the best shed, but it was her first with me. hopefully with proper husbandry (something the last owner didn't have) i can get her back to normal one piece sheds.

and the last 2 are crappy pictures but i found them halarious. i was rearranging the snakes tank and i put her on the bed and my dog either didn't see her or just didn't care and jumped right up on my bed and layed down next to her. neither of them seemed to really care but i moved the snake nonetheless lol. i can see my clumbsy dog stepping on her or something.

thanks. the guy who had her before only had 1 hide on the hot side and the ceramic bulb had ho rheostat. i only had it plugged in at my house for about an hour and i checked it with my digital thermometer and it was almost 96 degrees already. i swapped it for a 75w red bulb and switched things around so there are 2 hides and within an hour last night she was in the cold hide and she's been loving it ever since. must have sucked to only have 1 hide in the sweltering heat. i swapped her big "log" hide thing for the plastic one in the BP's cage.

oh, and i changed the aspen the guy had for my reptibark-cocobut husk mixture.

I prefer the dums in aspen , what makes you like the coco fiber more?

aspen molds when you spray it too much, coconut fiber doesn't. not to mention i honestly like the smell of the coconut shreds and repti bark better. it's kind of lemony instead of the pissy wood smell the aspen gets.

I would suggest making the substrate much thicker. Dumeils are burrowers and ambush hunters. Theyre natural behaviour is to hide UNDER the substrate. I had mine in a nice thick layer of fur bark with some Chilean sphagnum moss on top.

Looking good- Oracle is growing nicely. I have to agree with hauntedone though...Dums like a nice thick layer of substrate. My fiance always kept his on coconut fiber, and the snake loved it. I found aspen molded too easily with the Dumerils.

everyone keeps saying to put more substrate, but she can not only hide COMPLETELY in the 3" reptibark and coconut fiber, but i can't imagine there being multiple feet of dirt and leaves on the ground anywhere. i would assume it'd be a few inches of loose top soil and stuff.

You don't need a few feet. You just need an amount that will allow them to comfortably hide their entire body under the substrate to the point you can only see jus past their eyes. sometimes you won't even see that much. I'd say get rid of the hides an make some kind of loose, thick substrate and put in some plants plus some pieces of wood and stones they can use when they shed.

i may add a few more inches of substrate just because, but she can already hide her whole body and i see her using the hot and cold hides all the time as well as hiding under the substrate, so i'm definetly not removing them. the setup i have right now is MORE then fine. the guy i got her from had an inch or two of aspen, 1 hide, a water bowl that took up half the cage, and a CHE that got WAY too hot.

now she's loving life.
