Re: Snakes Vs Winter
They will find a place to hibernate/brumate/hangout below the frost line. Usually the abandoned den of some animal. Or a cave, I have heard of them being found in abandoned house basements, storm sewers, and even missile silos, caves, etc. etc. In the case of garter snakes there could literally be hundreds in the same place. Now wouldn't that be cool to see?

Re: Snakes Vs Winter
Assuming you heat your enclosures then they wont know it is snowing outside?

Re: Snakes Vs Winter
It is not necessary to hibernate snakes, it will not change their life span either.
With proper husbandry any snake will live to it's maximum potential in captivity without hibernation.
To answer your original question, Underground snake dens!!
Even the U-Haul company celebrates snake dens!!

Re: Snakes Vs Winter
As Wayne has said there is no need to brumate unless for breeding purposes. That is awesome Wayne i wish we had places like that here that care enough about snakes!!

Re: Snakes Vs Winter
watched a programme last night about the burmese pythons in the ever glades in florida
they took 12 or so males to a colder state
put them in a purpose built encloser
they fenced off roughly an acre of ground
it had trees in it
the burms survived the winter by basking high up in the trees
to combat the lack of food (as none was provided by their captors) they ate birds that landed on the trees
it was incredible to see how they adapted so quickly and all survived
every burm was in perfect health after the winter
now the scientist are crapping themselves as this prooved that the burmese can survive in colder places so can inhabit more of usa.
they also found the snakes could get to an island roughly 35 kilometers from main land
it was a great programme
cheers shaun
