Finding a home for a burm

My girlfriend's family in NJ has a young Burm that they cant take care of. Last time I saw it it had old pieces of shed on it and is not receiving the best care. It is already outgrowing its tank. I dont think I can handle a giant right now. I told her I would pay for it to be sent to me to find it a good home. Is that the best option? Any suggestions? Thanks!

gee - I hope more people breed even more burms next year!

maybe they drop the price to 20.00$ than every irresponsible person can get one

Hey I bet if the gave away an iguana and a red ear slidder with every burm they`d sell even more

No need for your attitude. This snake was left with them by the daughter's ex boyfriend when he moved. They dont have the space or the means to take care of a large snake. I am doing what I can to find it a home. Either be helpful or keep quiet. Thanks!

seriously though - not many people in their right mind would take a burm
don`t get me wrong - there are plenty of responsibly owners out there right now, but you`re going to haver a tough time

I`m sure some one will take it but more than likely it will be some one who doesn`t have a clue and would take it on the cool factor, and then it will end up in the same place

If I were you i`d look for a reputable reptile rescue to hand it over to...

I am sure somebody would want to take care of it. It is still young and fairly small.

I think that the attitude is necessary. There are stories like this every day of the week and people think that they can just dump their problem on someone else because they were too brainless to consider that a cute baby burmese python is going to grow. It is always difficult to educate people on their choices after the fact. Sorry but maybe the daughter's boyfriend should be contacted to come and take care of HIS responsibility, otherwise have fun getting rid of the burm. And before you cap off at me....I adopted two snakes that no one wanted in the past year and both of them were starved and had shreds of dead skin on them. I DID save two snakes from a couple of idiots that sound alot like your daughter's ex-b/f.

I hear ya

I adpoted an iguana at our local SPCA because some one dumped it in the park, (imagine is sunny Saskatchewan no less)- she`s real skinny but not as unpleasent as you`d imagine

I can`t appoligise for comming of short but seriously if I were you `id look for a reptyle rescue!

If either of you would have listened insteading being so quick to criticize you would have seen that this is not my snake, I had nothing to do with it being acquired by the current owner and I live 1500 miles away from them. I am just doing my best to find it a home where it will be properly taken care of. The attitude would have been warranted if it was my snake and I was getting rid of it because I didnt want to take care of it anymore.

I'd have to agree here. This person has nothing to do with the problems you guys speak of. Yes those problems exist, YES we all have to hear about them and deal with them in the herp community, but this wasn't his snake.

What's he supposed to do? Allow it to live where proper care cannot be provided?

jglass if you do a search online you can find some organizations to help you, or putting up a local ad can help find a home. Although you would want to screen the people to make sure its going to be cared for properly. Burms are a touchy subject in the reptile community so please take everyones responses as a sign of their passion for this hobby and not as attacks although they seem that way.

Thanks for your help. I keep smaller snakes so I admit I am not that aware of the touchiness ofthe subject. But from what I see at the herp store, there are a lot of old burms there. I will look into a rescue in their area. If I had the room I would take the snake in myself. I just wouldnt have the space for a 15+ft snake. Thanks again for the info!

A lot of rescues you will find will refuse the snake because they are either over run or because they cannot handle it.

After looking online myself a bit, I think your best bet will be to post an ad locally or on a reptile website for the snake. Many herpers out there can take care of it and some are willing to take them in. It can be hard but there are people out there who would take a burmese in and be able to care for it. Make sure the buyer is the right one or else you are creating another problem. Ask them about the set up, if its already set up, temps, heat sources, food availability, things like that.

was my intial comment directed at jglass - no it was a general comment about burms - no a thing to do with his situation...

needless to say I did give advice for what he should do - NEVER did I say that he caused the problem

However I did comment on the fact that it was not a good idea to comment on the size of it now as point as to why some one would want it

That really sucks I can`t believe people can get away with selling them at that price!

I hope you can work something out to give this animal a good home
