It depends on what you consider a "sub-adult". It also depends entirely on size and whether or not he is producing sperm. Males usually begin producing sperm at or around 600-900 grams. Once he is at least that big (and/or producing sperm) you have to see if he is even mature enough to be sexually active; some males won't go their first winter (even if they are producing sperm and are big enough to breed).
