Cage Top

Was just wondering about the top of my savannah's tank. It's got a huge screen lid and ive always kept a large piece of glass over 3/4 of it and left about 2 ft open for ventilation and lighting, but yesterday I was told this wasn't a good idea.... However as long as I've had him I've read and beleived that having the glass there was a good idea. Like to hear what alot of you have to say on the matter.

The reason for closing in the top is to conserve heat and humidity.
With a screened top, you will lose it. When my savs were babies, I used a piece of plywood to cover the whole top with a section cut out for the light.

It also might be a good idea to invest in building a age instead of a tank.

I do plan on building a cage when I have the room but for now a 6 1/2 x 3 x 3 seems like its big enough for a 2 1/2 ft savannah. Trust me I'd definatly have a bigger cage if it was absolutly necisary at the moment space perhibiting or not, trust me I'd get rid of my bed before I let my favorite pet be unhappy, and if I don't get a new place before he needs it I WILL get rid of my bed for room for his tank or possibly downsize some of the other lizards tanks who have way more room then needed but I feel the bigger the better for all the lizards I keep, the couch is probably more comfortable anyways. The reason I dont have him in a differant part of the house is the people I'm living with wouldn't enjoy that thats why I've got all my lizards in my bedroom. Talk about an insane amount of upkeep to make sure your room still smells fresh lol

my savannah is just a tiny thing but i'm planning on getting him a cage built from animal plastics.

I know how you feel when you say you would give up your bed for the sake of your animals. I am just about at that point. I have 3 snakes on a shelving unit.....my iggys cage in my room. I also have anothers snakes tank on top of my dresser and a big 55 split in two with a stand.......and Im getting another one soon?! I must be crazy....im already planning on moving out to one of the living rooms (good thing i have two) and leaving my reptiles in my room. My one roomate HATES snakes and doesnt know im getting this next one.......oh well.

Who told you that wasn't a good idea and what was their reasoning for this?? This is why many people use rubbermaids with few ventilation holes. It helps control the climate in the enclosure a lot better. Screen lids are only good for desert species and rodents IMO. They shouldn't be sold as a reptile lid, cause they aren't. I have a 30 gallon standing on it's side for my crested gecko and the lid is about 4/5 covered with plexi glass. This helps keep in the humidity, he's not dead yet either! I would say your okay.

I dont recall who said that its been awhile even since I posted that. I have a screen lid on my cresties cage but its a large hexagonal tank very tall, and the water I spray at the bottom seems to be there all day plus he's got multiple humid hides, amongst regular hides. The screen lid may be the reason he remains at the bottom during the day though because i do 2 heavy mistings at night one at 9 and another at midnight when he tends to be active, I also give him one at 8 am when i wake up but that one is just to maintain humidity.

Also all those lizards I have listed as owning are in my room and my smallest tank is 30 gallons which is for my leo trio, and i have a 40 gallon tall and my next smallest for my armadillo lizard which I'm really trying to find a new home for so I can expand my crested collection a buddy keeps telling me he wants him but still hasnt got the room but he's cool for the meantime I just prefer lizards that arent so skittish
