Sexing A Baby

I was at the pet store today( not one that I was going to before) and they have some babies. The guy there said that they were about 3 months old. They looked great! About 8 inches long I figure. I was thinking that I want to get a female so I asked him about sexing them and he said that it is still too early to tell. Is it?
The reason that I was going for the female was in case we decided down the road to get another. The tank that I have is 100 gallons so I figure I have the room. Plus I have thrre kids who might not be able to "share".

Thanks!!
Glenn

Unfortunately, sexing at this age is nearly impossible. If there are several of them, you can turn them belly side up and compare the tails starting at the base. The tails of males will taper more gradually than the female's and overall will be thicker. Also, males should have slightly larger heads. These differences are subtle and take a practiced eye, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference myself.

Actually, they can be sexed right out of the egg. And if you know what you are doing, this can be done with 100% accuracy. At three months, it is easily identified.

LOL! Right out of the egg is exaggerating a little bit, but at three months - definitely.

how are you doing it at 3 months?? males and females have femoral pores at that age they dont begin to seperate until a later age.. I still wont say its easy to sex that early man.. Maybe some individuals, but not all.

Sexing at a young age is very hard, except for the trained eye. I know of only one beardie breeders in my area that can sex at 1 month old and have the majority come out right. To do this you would have to have alot of experince with beardies.

We can sex them almost right away......we also offer a free dragon of the customers choice to anyone that we make a mistake with the sex. Hasn't happened yet......

When you are dealing with dragons all day.....it becomes very easy to notice the differences with babies. We don't go by the pores or tail taper etc....we go by the bulges.

Megan is certainly right. A well trained eye can accurately sex babies almost right away. Once you know the subtle differences it is easy. Rob & Vickie Dachiu (the U.S. breeder I represent) have shown me some really neat tricks that I didn’t know about even after all the years I have been sexing babies. But no one can say 100% right out of the egg if a baby is a female. You can say 100% if it is a male because of the hemipenile bulges. However they are sometimes hard to see right out of the egg. Even some of the to U.S. breeders have been wrong from time to time. But offering an exchange policy is a great way for people to get the sex they are looking for. But sometimes people find it hard to send back a dragon after a few months that they have raised and bonded with just because it’s not what sex they need.

I like to sell babies at around 10-12 weeks because you have a good idea of color potential and sex is 100% guarantied. Food costs are more to keep them that long but you are selling a well started babies

That's why we offer an additional dragon of their choice, not an exchange. I realize it can be hard for people to give up a dragon that they have grown attached to.
