Snail :)

Here's my apple snail. I know it's kind of weird, but I love this guy. I bought him when he was the size of a nickel. I pretty much got him to keep my tank clean.

Well, it took him no time to eat all of the live plants in my tank. So I got plastic ones and continued to feed him greens. In 8 months, he's gotten huge and has become my fav. critter in my tank and he only cost me a couple of dollars

. He lets me hand feed him. I was doing some maintainence and decided to let him out for a second for pics.

Thats the collest pet ever lol...what tank did he clean for you? What type of enclosure/habitat would it need..

He's in a fresh water tank with tropical fish. Unfortunately, the only thing he cleaned up were my live plants - lol. I don't usually handle him or anything, but I was cleaning and I took him out for a minute to take the pics. You can buy them at any pet store, people buy them as feeders for monitors as well. Thanks!

Edit: Oh, I think that I'd like to get a Giant African land snail. Will anyone be selling them at the show?

Our applesnail laid 200 eggs, they should hatch within the week.

They are very cool critters - yours looks like it may be albino or something. I saw a few leucistic applesnails last week, and only the foot is white.

I would love to see a leucistic. He may be albino, his eyes are red.

Ryan, congrats! Do you breed them for your monitors or as pets?

Yness, these guys can get up to 5 ", you can actually see in the second picture where his growth started with me. If there is a ridge in the shell, it means that's where growth has stopped. This usually happens because of being in transit to pet stores and what not.

I think that Giant African Land Snails are the biggest, getting up to 8". I would really like to get one. Apparently, they don't need a mate to lay fertile eggs. Can these be fed to monitors like the apple snails? I'm curious because they lay like 100 eggs at a time and I doubt that I could find homes for them all. I could maybe sell them as feeders as well.

Some species of giant land snail lay 100 eggs ..some only 20 ... it varies ...I am currently working with an unknown species ... a few offspring have been sent to the Toronto Zoo last June for observation ... and will soon be sent to Ottawa for ID... Mine lay between 30 -40 eggs ...and hatch in approx. 5-7 days ... Some take months to hatch ... so it varies ... I always have some available .... so Pm OR EMAIL me ... I live in Oshawa. Keep in mind, I was having some fun with the classified add. I never thought any one would appreciate breeding for temperment, until I saw the pictures at the begginning of this post.

I hope to sell many of the applesnails, but I may save some as breeders, and use the resultant offspring as a treat for the monitors.

We had Giant African Land snails - but unfortunately they dried out, and did not survive. They are also technically illegal without a CFIA permit - something we found out after we bought them. They also come in Leucistic.

Birth certificates eh - lol! I just like this guy. I think that they make cool pets too. Would the giants be safe to feed to an adult sav?

We had about 100 more eggs!!!! I'm gonna be ritch!!!!!

With any purchase of 10 or more applesnails, I might include a T-shirt that says "I (heart) snails!" - it's gonna catch on, I can feel it!!!!

Oh, and you can feed Giant African Land snails to Savanna monitors - but it is cruel to the snail. Have you ever heard a snail scream? They have feelings too you know.
