I think it depends on the type of sand. Like I said, my GF keeps hers on what is mainly bird millet, she has taken all the sunflower seeds out, because the shells can cause impaction. When her Uro wakes up in the morning, he will sometimes munch on his substrate as a morning snack. Its 100% digestable. He usually finds the split peas and dried corn thats in it.
Bartman.....I keep mine on sand as well and have never had any problems. The bird seed sound's like a good idea the bedding that is in the pic is coco bark. And it is just a tank i put him in when i am cleaning his tank.
