thought I would share what I did with my afternoon. After being bombbarded by its parents, I was able to scoop this little guy off the ground. His wing is broken and is taped and splinted now, so hopefully a quick recovery.

Crows, ravens and magpies are such intelligent birds. If you have it for a while you may be able to teach it to talk. I once had a magpie that had been shot in the wing. Many people said hewould not talk if his tongue was not split--he did just fine with his tongue the way God made it. I only had it for about 6 weeks before it started saying "Hi" and "Bob" quite clearly. I was very sorry to see him leave. I can only imaging how surprised people were when this magpie hollered "hi" to them. He came back every spring for three years and then he stopped coming home. I choose to believe that he found a nicer spot than my yard to reside in.

My grandpa had a small baby raven wash up on his porch during a flood. He saved it and it lived in his hobby room/garage where it could fly and hop around.

He seemed to do well with it, even if it was raised on nearly entirely mexican food scraps. Eventually he opened the door and a few weeks later he was ready to go outside for good.

One summer I saved a little robin that fell out of it's nest, I spent all my time with it until it could fly upwards and hunt by itself. "Chirpy" (lol, I know) has come back the last few summers and has a mate with him. Good luck with the crow!

Crows can carry the West Nile Virus. My boss Dr. Anne McDonald says there is some question of whether they can transmit the virus if their fluids touch any open cuts or something. As your health is not at its prime Beth you may be especially vulnerable.

BTW If the bird dies I think that the public health dept wants the bodies of all dead crows sent for testing.

To others who see baby crows....this one needed rescuing because of a broken wing but so many of the baby birds we have brought to us at the bird clinic should not have been rescued. Baby birds actually spend time on the ground before they can fly. They parents guard them and make them hide in bushes and then go off to collect food for them. They have not been abandoned or pushed out of the nest too soon. This is normal and a part of the process. Unless you can clearly see the animal is sick or injured its best to leave it alone. Many rescued baby birds die from the stress of human contact and they were not in need of rescueing. If you need to know what to do about a bird you see please call your local wild life rescue first to ask them how to tell if you should interfere. Beth is an animal health professional so she knows what to do.

I have already been in contact with two bird vets and they are both aware of the bird being here. The chances of it having west nile are 1/1000000 as it would have died within 24 hours of contracting the disease.......and trust me,.....alls that is wrong with him is he's got a busted wing from leaving the nest a bit too soon.

lol Beth we have the sam luck. At least once a month I will come home with a baby rabbit, bird with broken neck or a dog that has nearly been smoked by a car.

my cat brought in a baby-ish grey tit yesterday! (and i thought my cat was old and crippled...)
well i tried to jump in to the rescue!
it must have died from shock because my mom saw it fluttering about, and i insisted that it was still alive cause it felt warm , i thought it may have just passed out or something! (silly me..i know) but yeah...it died, my cat has a tendency to eat alot of our garden wildlife........she has a bit of a taste for frogs, toads and bees
