Tips on choosing a baby jungle jag
Hi All,
So i'm doing my research on owning a jungle jag carpet python as i think they look beautiful as adults. I already have a brb and a common boa (bi) so like to think i know what i'm doing in terms of husbandry etc
Question i have is when looking online at babies what's the best way to pick a jungle jag that will look nice when it's all grown up?
I know they look completley different as babies which is what i'm struggling with. They look really dull in color so is it just pot luck when picking a baby or will they all turn into beautiful adults in terms colour changing to yellow/white and looking like a jag etc if they're advertised as a jungle jag? I'd really appreciate any pointers or tips if there are any.
Since i'm posting, does anyone have any breeder reccomendations or is kingsnake/fauna my best bet?
And one more question i promise, is their availability all year round or are there specific times of the year where there would be more up for sale?
Thanks for any feedback!

Re: Tips on choosing a baby jungle jag
I don't keep jags because of the neuro issues but I know Nick Mutton at Inland Reptile, Chris Behof, Hesham at Magic Carpet Python and a few others on the web and Facebook produce some really nice jags. I got 3 of my 4 carpets from Nick Mutton. The breeders usually have animals in stock and there are lots of 2016 babies on the market now. When it comes to picking a nice carpet I try to get as much lineage information as possible. Ask for pics of the parents at the very least. Beyond that I go with the animal that has the pattern I like most. Good luck choosing a carpet they're a blast to keep.

Re: Tips on choosing a baby jungle jag
Echoing what EZ said, if you buy from someone with great lineage and you can see what the parents look like, it is a fairly reliable indicator as to what the offspring will look like when mature. Also as he said, just be aware of the neurological issue that's linked to the jaguar gene and if that isn't a deal breaker for you, try to get one with a very minor wobble.

Re: Tips on choosing a baby jungle jag
Thanks both for the responses, i'll check those breeders out. So even if they are advertised as "jungle jags" there's a chance they wont lighten up with age and end up looking like their name sakes? As for the neuro issues, yeah i'm aware of that and will be asking the breeders about it before purchase so hopefully find one with very minimal wobble and try to work out some type of "exchange for up to a month deal" if it turns out really bad once ive got it.

You may not be successful with the "exchange for up to a month" clause for a variety of reasons, but best of luck in your search. Keep us updated!

Re: Tips on choosing a baby jungle jag
I traded a guy my 9 month old JCP for a seven year old JCP "Moe"... He's not a trophy carpet but he looks good...
Keep you eye on craigslist... 3 out of 5 of my snakes came from there... Also if you can see the parents it will help... I am not 100% sure but the way I understand is they lose colour as they age... That's one of the reasons I wanted an adult... The other is the baby's go through a nippy stage that last a year...
The 9 month old I traded must have bit me 50 times in a month... I'm not sure if this is like this with the Jag Jungle Carpets but you might want to ask the breeder... Good luck with your hunt...

Re: Tips on choosing a baby jungle jag
Thanks! Hopefully i'll find the right one. I've read their colours get brighter/change from baby/juvie to adult which is why i was asking. As for the nippy part, i dont mind that, my 2 year old brb was nippy as hell as a baby but he's tamed down now.

Re: Tips on choosing a baby jungle jag
This is my seven year old Jungle x Jag. Has you can see Jags hold their color better than regular Carpets. The color doesn't fade like with a plain Jungle. Now ones like my tiger Jag will never be quite as bright or yellow. All i have to say is i never seen a dull or muddy looking adult jungle x jag.
