Good news and bad news!
Good news-- went to the reptile show and found the most beautiful red baby female hognose for 99$ from my local viv. Bad news is, I didn't get her. BUT! They did mention they had a new clutch of babies that were just recently born and that I could have first dibs on one of the boys once theyve eaten and are ready to go. =D
Pretty bummed I didn't go home with a snake over the weekend, but stoked that I'll be able to get the snake I wanted and not have to settle. X3
I also found a beautiful green 2-4yr boy at the viv when I went to speak to someone at the store. He was 149$, which was a bit out of budget for me, but boy was he putting on the charm~ Definitely fell in love with him. He's been at the viv for a couple of weeks now, which tugged at my heart (since I love the 'rejects'), so if the babies aren't ready to go by this coming Saturday or Sunday, my husband will buy me the big boy. He definitely won my heart. <3
Will post pictures soon of whatever it is I end up getting. So excited!

I REALLY wanted the girl, but my husband made me stick to my male rule. She was so sassy! <3 Scared the poop out of me when I began educating my husband about hognoses, struck my hand and hissed super loud. First time that's happened to me so it totally caught me off guard. But yeah, only reason I want a boy is cause they stay relatively smaller than the females (which aren't huge to begin with anyway, but I only have so much space in my apartment and can only afford so big a tank as to accommodate anything larger than a male hog. But we'll see come the weekend; may just end up coming home with the big guy.

Re: Good news and bad news!
Well, I keep my female in a 20 long tank. Not too much larger than a 10.
I also find that the females are more active and visible. Just my experience though, which is pretty limited.

Re: Good news and bad news!
My male is pretty active. Been trying to escape lately. He did have a little hissy fit with me the other day, nothing super loud as far as hissing. I thought it was his fake leaves making the noise. Hard to be scared of something that cute and small.
Anyway Kanadi, glad you found something! Normal red hog right? Was the green a hognose too?

Re: Good news and bad news!
So far I've found my males to be way more dramatic and harder to get to eat. The females are just little garbage cans.
Can't wait to see pics

haha I wish I considered that before deciding on a male... like the OP I have limited space and why I went with a male. We're doing ok on eating. I think he might be a once a week feeder tho.

yeah from what I was told the female was a normal red, and the green big boy was a hognose too. I couldn't stop thinking about him all night. I think he might be the one. X3 But I wanna give the babies a shot, see if maybe I find one I can fall in love with, too. However, I've told myself that if the babies aren't ready by Sunday, I'm just gonna go for the green hog if he's still available. if not, I will wait patiently for the babies to be ready.

Yeah a green hognose sounds neat. Share pics if you get him. Never seen a green one before.

I wouldn't let it discourage you from getting a male!
They can be fussier (again, just in my limited experience! There are others here with WAY more experience with hogs) but it's not to the point that they're in danger. My first male is now eating almost as well as my female. The other two males I've only had for a month or so. So it really is early for me to be drawing conclusions but I did want to mention it.
Lovely hogs Mink!

Re: Good news and bad news!
Yup! Pretty subtle difference from the yellows too. Would have to see them side by side to tell them apart. Reds really stand out though. I also have a yellow phase conda male, a standard albino female, and an extreme red albino male. Love all my babies! Lol
