Can someone identify this snake please?

Hey everyone, my brother sent me this picture of a snake that was killed in CT. It does not look like a native species but I have no clue. Can someone identify this thing?

The picture is intentionally deceptive. It was taken using a technique called forced prospective to make the snake appear much larger than it really is. The head and tail are hidden and all we can see is the belly. This type of photo is very common on social media. It is meant to incite a negative response, typically fear or hate, and is usually very successful. Do you have a better picture? One not so obviously misleading?

It was a friend of my brother's that took the picture and I am positive it was not done to invoke any reaction. He was just showing what he found in his yard. I am trying to get additional photos.

Jut a guess from the belly pattern; northern water snake.

I would say Northern Water Snake. I just found a baby one and the belly pattern looks the same. And that is the typical colors for them.

I have an adult northern water snake in the freezer and it has the same belly pattern.

The picture is a forced perspective. That water snake is most likely 3 to 3 1/2 feet.

Here's a photo of me with a 7ft rattlesnake.


Here's a photo of my daughter with the same snake 2 minutes later. Turns out it wasn't a rattlesnake afterall. And, maybe not quite 7ft.
