Re: Bedding!
Sooooo … what is the question? If you're asking whether aspen is good. Yes its OK but tends to mold in higher humidity. Bark mulch substrate may be a better choice

Re: Bedding!
Aspen is great. I've used it for almost 9 years now and love it. Never an issue. 2 inches packed down is great and gives them a 3D surface to grab onto when they crawl about the cage.

Re: Bedding!
Most of the complaints I hear about aspen are rarely from first hand experience. People say they carry/give mites. I've never experienced it before and the folks I know of that use aspen and got mites bought snakes from shady people and had no quarantine protocol in place, but of course they blame the aspen. I've heard horror stories of impaction from feeding on aspen but have yet to experience it for myself in the nearly 9 years I've used it, nor come across anyone who has firsthand experience with it. Sure it will mold if the humidity is too high but 50-60% humidity isn't going to cause that. Spilled water bowl and condensation build up will though. That's the only problem I've ever had with it.

Re: Bedding!
So far mine hasn't had any problems with aspen. When I spray her tank it doesn't get moldy/wet like I thought it would. Someone on here told me to not "spray" the tank, but gently mist, thank God. :P The lamp usually helps in that case.

Re: Bedding!
Save any worries and just use cocohusk.

Re: Bedding!
There's nothing really wrong with it but I find it makes a huge mess and molds really easily. When I used it for my Nicaraguan Boa in a tub, I found mold often. I switched to coconut husk.

Re: Bedding!
Cypress mulch is my all-time favorite substrate for snakes. It holds humity great, never molds, and mimics most snakes' natural environments. I've also found that my snakes have an easier time shedding on it too, due to the rougher texture.

Re: Bedding!
Aspen is actually moisture resistant, I have never, never had mold in any of my cages. If you have your moisture level is way to high!!!! You need to buy it from a commercial source, not a saw mill. The Aspen I buy at Tractor Supply has been processed so mites are never an issue. My boas love it, they bury themselves in it. The larger boas pack it down pretty quick so whenever I go to put them back in their cage I always fluff it up for them.

Re: Bedding!
I switched to bark/mulch about 5 days ago and it has seemed to help, and it looks nicer than aspen!
