Some Garters will eat appropriate size mice, but all of mine love fish.

That was my thoughts exactly! What do Garter snake owners buy at pet shops as feeders? I reckon gold fish are avoided?

I buy fresh fish from the grocery store. I cut it into strips and hand feed or put it in a dish and they go crazy over it. Check thamnophis.com for more info, it is our sister forum.

Thanks J, in the wild, it is more fish and frogs , worms and slugs. As captives, the diet should be rodent based to support nutrition and limit parasitic loads. However variety in the diet is important. The safe thiaminase free fish is what you want to feed them.
