Mine will only take live, too. I haven't had a rat poop or pee in her enclosure but there's a lot of blood to clean up (since she's a large adult). I personally would feed her in her enclosure and just clean the poop and pee. But it's your choice!

As for how often they eat.. Dumeril's have slower digestive tracts so you want to wait until you see them roaming aroind their cage looks for food, or feed them when they poop, which does not work once they're older since they poop a few times every however many months. For a baby, you'll probably be safe feeding once a week
