what is the difference between irian jaya and jungle carpet python
Hey guys. My question is mostly concerned with willingness to climb. I read somewhere that jayas are not semi aboreal but can not validate this. I am trying to make a choice between the two species but cannot find good info regarding their differences. Thanks.

A few feet. My ij loves to sit up on his perch a lot more then my jungles.

Re: what is the difference between irian jaya and jungle carpet python
The main difference I've noticed with mine is size and color. They both are willing to climb. Now there may be differences between individual snakes. I've had jungles and ijs that would perch all day and jungles and ijs that wouldn't. IMO it would depend on the individual.

Set up and temperament will be the same, IJ's will be smaller as adults.

Re: what is the difference between irian jaya and jungle carpet python
The difference begins with the location of origin. IJs are slightly smaller and have a slightly different pattern but they are both carpets and have similar husbandry and behavior.
If size has you thinking an IJ would be better stop worrying. A 7 ft carpet is easy to handle.
My friends kids handle ours all the time with no problems. These are thinner boddied and not near as heavy or strong as lets say a boa or even an adult royal. A full grown female royal of 5ft is as thick/strong of a snake as a 7ft carpet. Just not as long.
Far to many people get concerned with a foot or 2 of length and forget girth.
Even big carpets are easy to keep. If you like IJs get one but if you like JCPs don't get an IJ just because it might be smaller. It's not much difference in the long run.

If you want a small JCP... find a breeder there with pure Palmerston locale stock.

From my experience, IJs are generally tamer (less likely to be bitey) than jungles or coastals. Depending on the individual, both generally like to climb.

Re: what is the difference between irian jaya and jungle carpet python
Thanks alot guys. Size of the snake is not really an issue. The size of the enclosure is what I was concerned with. I like the length of the enclosure to be at least the length of the snake. I know you guys probably think thats overkill, but thats what I was concerned with in regards to size.

Re: what is the difference between irian jaya and jungle carpet python
Carpets need taller cages with stuff to climb. A 4x2x1 is ok for an adult royal but a same size carpet would be better in a 3x2x2. I have big enclosures for mine but you don't 100% need to go that big.

Re: what is the difference between irian jaya and jungle carpet python
Also, one more question; the breeder said that she is eating F/T rat pups (which is good) but they need to be left in with her over night. She is a 2011 and nearly 18" long. SHould this make me wary?

It is a bit overkill, but its more about what the snake is comfortable in than what you think looks good. You need to be able to read a snake to figure out what size enclosure it wants. There are general rules for a starting point, but that's all that is, a starting point. My general rule is the floor area needs to be the same as the snake is long. So for a 6 foot snake, a 3x2 is perfect. For arboreals you obviously have to worry about height as well, 3-4 feet is generally what I hear for them, but a scrub (morelia amethestinia) is gonna obviously prefer more at 15+ feet.

I am currently switching my entire herd to my new reptile room so I have everyone in temp enclosures and tubs. I will post a bunch of pics of it all in a week or so after I get it all figured out and everyone back in their vivs.
