Re: Cobra and Baby

I'm completely ignorant when it comes to other cultures and how they treat their animals. I knew they used snakes for charming, but always thought it was done in a non cruel way. It wasn't blatantly obvious (to me anyway) that the animal was being mistreated.

Re: Cobra and Baby

While I personally find sewing a snake's mouth shut abhorent I think it's not really fair to harshly judge other cultures by our own standards. As Rob mentioned 'ya gotta do what ya gotta do' sometimes to feed your family and if it's this or starve it's probably not a choice at all for these people. It's certainly not like they're getting rich doing it.

Things are different in a way most of us (myself included) can't really understand in places like India. I imagine it will be decades before Western sensibilities take root enough there to put a stop to such things.

and personally, I'm glad for the animal cruelty video ban here. I prefer the sweetness and light vibe of this place.

Yup, this is especially common among snake charmer shows in Asia. They'll either remove the fangs, surgically remove the venom glands etc, or sew the mouths shut. Sewing the mouths shut has to be the worst since they can't eat and it's only a matter of time before they starve to death. If people were removing the teeth of a dog or sewing the dogs' mouths shut, everyone would be all over it to make it stop. Unfortunately the majority of people don't feel the same way about scaley critters as they do about the furry ones.

Re: Cobra and Baby

I think as of late they've been taking to removing the venom glands or sewing the mouth shut because, like other snakes, teeth grow back, the ones in the back move forward to replace the ones removed.

Re: Cobra and Baby

Over there they don't go through any fancy surgeries, they just yank out the fangs and sew them up, can get a few days "entertainment" out of the snake before it dies.

I have no idea what source the leather comes from so I guess it could be something bad. I like stuff like this, any time I can get ahold of a naturally deceased reptile I love turning it into something nifty.

Slaughtered monitor lizards....

How could you wear a watch made out of Chomper's mom or dad?

Re: Cobra and Baby

although we don't agree with it, there's nothing we can do about it. To them its no different than cow or other animal leather. I can't condemn it without being a hypocrite either, I love my leather jacket.

Re: Cobra and Baby

Yeah, my ladies wear leather too.

But I have never had feelings for a cow either, aside from how tasty a steak is.

I beg to differ. We raise cows for food, the left overs (skin/hide) is recycled into clothing, food for other animals, binding for books, etc. Not one part of that animal is wasted. There is a huge difference between raising animals to slaughter soley for their hides and raising animals for food and then making sure everything is used so there isn't any waste.

Same for gators & rattlesnakes- they are sold as food and their hides are turned into clothing. I abhor the practice and do not eat or wear anything that is of an animal I will not first use as a food source.

Generally, we do not torture an animal (sewing it's mouth shut, removing teeth) for entertainment purposes. This is just wrong.
