Re: Most interesting species of snake?

I haven't had snakes in like 15 years but I know a guy who has a massive snake collection and he says the most interesting snakes personality wise are the indigo snakes.

Then again, it depends what you find interesting? Is burrowing interesting? Get a sand boa. Is being arboreal interesting? Maybe get a GTP... etc etc.

Re: Most interesting species of snake?

Personality wise, I would say Carpets for a non-hot. Specifically Coastal Carpets (Morelia spilota mcdowelli)

Hot I would have to say Timber Rattlesnakes aka Canebrakes (Crotalus horridus)

Re: Most interesting species of snake?

For me the most interesting species is Indigos due to their natural history and unique husbandry compared to other colubrids. Bairds rat snakes for their interesting variability in pattern. From what I hear Russian rat snakes are extremely intelligent like people say the Indigos are and I find that to be very interesting as well. Thats my top 3.

Re: Most interesting species of snake?

Define interesting. If you mean alert and 'intelligent' my new scrub pythons win hands down - they seem to actively consider their actions like mmo snake I've seen.

That said I find the true arboreal snakes interesting from a personal point of view - the way my C hortulanus hunts and moves is incredible and I could watch him all day.

My olives are interesting not least for the difference in behaviour between the male and female and again they are active, alert snakes not often seen in the hobby.

My boa imperator is an awesome snake - the de facto 'large' snake a lot of people's mind and her markings are sublime.

My little boy's P obsoletus - a common snake - hunts and feeds more vigorously than just about any of the pythons I have.

The Madu super dwarf retic doesn't know it's not 20'+ of killing machine and has all the attitude of a mainland.

So, what traits in a snake interest you? Then we can work on more specific suggestions.

Re: Most interesting species of snake?

It's very personal, depends what you find interesting. All relative to what you like and look for. That's why we have such a range of snakes on here.

I've only had Irian Jaya and coastals, and coastals were my favorite. Nothing against any other species, just enjoyed coastal carpets the most.

Ok. I figured you were pointing to some difference in behavior.
