Guess I'll try digging around in the forests nearby. If you buy branches online they're crazy expensive.

Yea, they really are... the local shop here is selling off small bunches of Salix b. pekinensis wood for 20 euro. I mean, the hell, you can just go basically into any park or forest and you'll find them easily.

Have you ever seen the fines for taking wood/branches or lumber out of the forest/park in our little country though? Don't get caught!
