Hello, I am just looking to get info on the main differences between the Hog Island Boa and a Dumeril's boa. I am planning on getting one or the other most likely so any info about either or any big differences will be helpful. The viv i plan on using is 48Lx24Dx12H, so was also wondering if this would work for either snake;full grown.

Thanks for any help.

You could fit any male BCI in there

12" high is a little low isn't it? From what mark (gonesnakee) said 18" high would be the minimum. Other than that I know nothing about dums but a hogg's husbandry is pretty similar to other bci I think.

That's true good catch Kevin I think 16" is usually a standard height

Hogs get to the same size and are just as sturdy bodied. Then again there are always exceptions there is a keeper with dumrils on here (exiwizard) that has one much bigger than any hog I've seen.

Hog island boas are BCIs so most ave a pretty good temperament though that Is an individual thing.

well I've seen 7 and a 8 foot female dumerils many times but I never seen an male over 6 foot I think an dumeril will be better fit cause there always nice so id say go for an dumeril every one needs and dum

A female hogg may get to 6 or 7 feet but an eight foot female would be massive.

Aside from how radically different they look from one another and how far apart their natural distributions are, the size is the main difference. A Dumeril's can get quite a bit larger than your average Hogg Island will.

Temperament and requirement-wise, they're very similar but the buck stops there as far as I'm concerned :)

I think it's a personal choice personally I would take a hog island over a dumrils

I perfer an dumeril over an hog island lol IMO dumerils are more handable I haven't meet an dumeril yet that refuse to be held but as far of the OP goes its up to you ithere both good snakes

Hoggs would be my choice..I have owned and bred dumerils.I currently own a pair of hoggs.
I have seen some nasty dumerils and hoggs for that matter, but for the most part I think hoggs are the calmer of the two.

I like dumerils they got some stuning patterns but its up to the OP dumerils are down by one lol

Thanks for all the input, I am probably going to be going with a cage with the same dimensions but around 15 high instead of the 12. Seems a lot of people really like both and I hear great things about both, so that just makes my decision that much harder:( Just going to be looking around and seeing which snake really pops out at me. Thanks!

It IS a personal choice. I dont have any experience with Hoggs but I currently have 7 Dums. Husbandry is fairly simple. They aren't susceptible to dehydration like Brazilians. As long as you keep enough water in the tub/cage and their heat at least in the low 80s on the cool side and the upper 80s on the warm side, you will have a happy healthy snake. The males normally top out at 6' and the females normally top out at 7' (unless its Black Betty youre talking about. Shes the exception). Their temperment is very calm and tame. In fact, Ive never met a feisty Dum yet. Breeding them is a bit more of a challenge though. After lockup, the female can hold the sperm for a very long time, which explains why no one has ever come up with an exact gestation period for Dums. Depending on who you talk to you'll get 6 months up to 9 months. Bottom line on breeding is that the female is in TOTAL control over when it all happens. I hope that help explain Dums a bit more. :)

I'd love it if one of my dumerils became an exception.

I've never had a hog but I've had (and currently have one) other BCI's and I have dumerils. Quite honestly, I couldn't chose between the two. Both are great animals. For the most part both are docile, but I think the BCI's are more curious. When I have my BCI out, she's always on the move and active, quite nosey and curious about her surroundings. While my dumerils will move around a bit at first, like they're seeing what's up, then become, for the most part, a lap snake. Wherever I put them is pretty much where they stay. I can sit and watch movies with my dumerils, but really can't with my BCI.

Husbandry requirements are a bit similar but both are still really easy to keep. My dumerils have a better feeding response than my BCI as well. Both are great eaters.

It's going to come down to which one you like best and which one you think better fits you (like active or non active). It's definitely a personal preference and not one I'd want to make lol

Good luck with whichever you decide to get and keep us updated! :D

My male 5 year old hog is 7 feet! be prepared for any size, because 7 feet for a male is very rare.

I still think 15" high maybe a little too low.

For a heavy bodied snake I'd say 18 inch to 2 foot in height... My dwarf bci looked cramped in an 18" high viv so I upgraded.

When I was shopping for enclosures I asked on Red Tail boas forum, and most members agree that the Boaphile 421d is sufficient for most boas. With a dumeril you have the added bonus that they stay on the ground, so height of the enclosure really isn't an issue. That said I ordered a proline for my female dumeril, because it is BPA free, and 14" tall.

So why would 12" tall be to low for a boa? They do not require a taller cage. Many people keep adult boas in 12" tall cages. Other than taking them out i they are at all cage defensive I see no issues? Please correct me if I am wrong.

Well boas are considered semi arboreal. Would you leave a bull frog in an aquarium and not provide a dry land area for him?

I've seen my dumeril get on the branches in his tub and stay there a little bit of more height wouldn't hurt

If you handle the snake regularly it can climb and get exercise outside the tank. Especially for dumeril 12 inches is enough. I only needed 14, because I need a large heat panel.
