View Full Version : Stud Fee?
What is the typical reimbursement for loaning a corn snake to breed a single female? It's my own normal and I was curious what to expect. TIA
Half the offspring or half the profit made from the offspring are two somewhat common deals that people make with each other.

Not if you're only lending a male of equal or lesser value than the female and the other breeder is doing the breeding and incubating. Also, all the risk is placed on the other breeder's animal.
In your case, I would say you should be entitled to maybe a trio of babies. Why only that many? The other breeder could probably spend less than $200 and get a breeder male right now and not use yours at all. So, a trio is good because that is about what your male's services are worth to the breeder with the female.
I know if it were between borrowing your male and giving you $600 worth of hatchlings (a rough estimate) or buying my own for $200 and keeping all $1200 worth of babies, it wouldn't take me long to do the math. ;)
If your male was more valuable than the female, I would give you the appropriate compensation in return. For instance, if you were talking about ball pythons and I wanted to borrow your albino male to breed to my het female, you would be entitled to ½ of the babies, more or less depending on what hatched out.
It’s always good to work out all the scenarios ahead of time and make sure you both feel comfortable before doing any breeding loans. It gets tough to decide how to divide things up once the babies come out a greed rears it’s ugly head! :D
Good luck with the loan! :)
Thanks for the replies guys. Tim, I should have gone into more detail about the situation. The person with the female is my brother so it was like "Yeah lets breed these two!" and never really discussed how the deal would work. Both snakes are normals.
I cooled both snakes at my place (no feeding). They were brought out on Friday and the female returned to him where he will conditon her. When she's ready, my brother will return her to me for breeding. He will be incubating the eggs and it has not been discussed who will care for the hatchlings.
When we first decided to go ahead with it, I thought snake breeding loans were much like in the K9 world and the stud holder would get "pick of the litter" only. At the time though, all I was doing was supplying the male at the right time, nothing else.
I agree Tim. The one with the female should get more! The female is more at risk than the male.

Can I ask why you would bring the female to your place and then bring the eggs back to his place to incubate? Wouldn't it make more sense to just move the male over to his place for a few weeks? :)
Well, we wouldn't be bring the eggs back. It would be the whole snake! lol After the deed is done...
The reason is my cage is 36x18 and his is 30x12... so more room for the two of them at my place...
