Late late late, yet some are still paired up. I don't like it, but I do document it. So much for my nice, early, spread-out year.

Don't mind the glass. It doesn't get scrubbed until AFTER the breeding commences and the daily sprayings stop. I ain't gonna scrub out water spots and then put them back 2 hours later! Ha ha!

Notice the gravid female on the heat pad. Extra heat is necessary during gestation. They go right to it like clockwork, same time every day, around 10am. I don't ask, I just provide.

Close up of the two actually mating. If she was a good snake, she should eat, stop breeding, eat some more, ovulate......... IF she was a good snake. :p

Summer is going to ROCK man! Can't wait. OUTDOOR volleyball, woo-hoo!

First clutches should happen around April, with the first clutch hatching week one of June, and babies available 3 weeks later!

I'll keep you two updated, no worries! :D

Scott, you have NO idea man! Bright is an understatement. I had to turn the flash off because I was taking the pic through the glass. That pair is VELVET black and yellow! Its the pair that I'm most excited about this year! :D

Cheers man.

What time you comin' tomorrow?

No man, cage-juggling while feeding some, and combatting others. Just ended up that way, and now they are locked up. I have a few rules and that's 1) Don't move a gravid snake around, 2) Don't pull apart breeding snakes. #1 and #2 supercede my rule about housing singly right now so..........

:D

Ahhh... I've just heard that an ovulating (maybe even gravid) snake gives off some type of hormone that other females will pick up on. They are put together to "spur on" the more stubborn breeder females. Similar to combating males, I guess.

Not sure if this is true. I thought maybe you might be a believer yourself given the picture...

Just wondering... :)

Good point Tim. I know that human females that have been living together for a while will all lets say "cycle" at the same time. Is there similar "happenings" with snakes as well? Mark

Hmmm...could be, but then wouldn't it make more sense to have the breeding female be gravid and NOT breeding, like the one on the heat pad?

It'd be neat to experiment. I guess we kind of are.... :D

Perhaps the same hormone females release that attracts males, also induces nearby females to begin the reproductive cycle. Kind of out of competition. Who knows? Just a bunch of speculation. :)

This stuff is fun guys, and nice pic Jeff.
Weird things get snakes to breed.
We did not think the Jaguar was going to breed this year.
I briefly(5minutes)put him with an IJ male, nothing for a week. His brother(twice with different females) gets out and sleeps on top of the cage with the jag and a female. BAM within a couple hours locked up good. The things girls do to us guys.

Cheers
