I am asking this question to anybody who can tell me, especially those of you who specialize in Morelia. I would like to know what locale Argus is. Is she an Irian Jaya, Coastal or something else?

I was told by the guy who sold her to me that he thought that she might be an Irian Jaya and to me, she looked kind of like an IJ, but I am no expert on these things, so I went with it. I have 2 other IJs, but after posting Argus' pics on another forum and then asking a friend of mine who is better at IDing these things than I am, the prevailing opinion I got was that she is pure Coastal. A lightly colored Coastal but a Coastal nonetheless. That said, is she a Coastal and if not, what locale is she? She is still young (cbb March 2011) and she's not that big yet, but if in fact she is a Coastal, how big will she get?

Morelia spilota imbricata aka Southwestern or maybe a Darwin. How much did you pay? i believe Darwin and higher in price.

After comparing your pictures to some other i would say she looks like a super clean nice looking Coastal. After i looked and some more pictures of Darwin and Southwestern they are darker than yours. I think what you have is a true 100% Coastal and that why it's looks so light. Most Coastal you see now days are so from of cross with something else mixed in. That just my opinion i really like to her what some of our Carpet experts think.
Being a Coastal you can look at around 9 to 10 feet.

I'm sorry. It's only a cell phone camera and she is very shy, not to mention she loves it in there, so better pace are hard to get.

Thanks Chuck. That confirms what others have been saying. :)

Looks like a coastal type animal to me as well.

You'll never know exactly. Most "unknown" carpets in the US are bi-products of Jag breedings these days. Anybody breeding true type animals will sell as such and the info on the lineage will be solid in most cases.

Cheers,
D

You got one heck of a deal. A real nice example of a Coastal Carpet plus such a sweet cage for only $200.00 got to love a deal like that.

DI did not get her from a breeder. The guy had to downsize his collection and I was the beneficiary of that. :) Everyone I spoke to since this error came up in the other forum said she is a pure Coastal.

Those are the deals I like the best. :)

Love the tank. My IJ would make serious use out of it, especially if it was just a bit wider. Looks like a Coastal to me but I'm not good with identifying ;)

I may be wrong but I've heard from various sources that just like Jungles, there are many variations of the coastal carpets when it comes to size.

For the most part Southern Coastals are the monsters that grow to be that big, while northerners max out around 7, usually 6 feet.

From Nick Muttons Website

Most specimens are smaller however and average around 7’ in length. There is a correlation between size and distribution with the largest specimens originating in the southern portion of their range from the vicinity of Brisbane. Animals from further north are generally smaller in size.

So then it depends if it a Southern or Northern? So what we need now are some in put from our Aussie members as to if there's a way to tell the difference? I could be wrong but aren't the Southerns lighter in color? I could have sworn i read that once but can find the source now.

I'd say we need to get trueblue in here lol.

Coastal carpets come in just about every pattern and colour you can think of.(with in reason of course), pretty much all over their range.
They would have to be one of, if not the most variable snake in the world.
Could easily be a coastal.
But no sure way to tell.

Unfortunately, if you did not get her from a breeder then you will never know what type of carpet it actually is. (And, even if you did, you're still taking somebodies word that it's "pure")
Nobody will be able to tell you if it's pure or not based on looks. Carpet Pythons are one of the most variable animals in existent.

It does look like a nice Coastal Type animal though. I'd still put my money on a Jag Sib.

D

it looks Coastal but with all the cross breeding that goes on, i'm leaning towards a jag sib

without good lineage info,we will never know

its a good looking Carpet mate

cheers shaun
