Can a snake drink too much water?

I volunteered to foster a boa that is several years old. It is five or six feet in length and is shiny and beautiful and appears to be very healthy. But it never had access to water, other than occasional soaks in a bathtub. After being placed in its new enclosure, it has had its head in the water dish for hours now, appearing to alternately drink and soak. Is this OK? Can a thirsty snake drink too much water, or will it self-regulate?

When a snake drinks water you can see it. Its kind of obvious movement of the mouth. If its just sitting there and not doing anything it could be regulating its temps or possible snake mites. Or I suppose it could be staying near its water source since it may have been seeking it out for a while.
