High humidity for Dumerils Boas - Yes or no?

Dear reader,
I want to get myself a Dumerils Boa (Acrantophis dumerili) and so I am informing myself about keeping this species right now.

Problem is I just found two different sources about this topic which contradict each other. The Reptilesite LLLReptiles states that Dumerils Boas need high humidity in their enclosures opposed to that the youtuber Nyxilyn's Reptiles describes how such snakes really like a dry environment and also shows a couple of her own healthy Dumerils.

Humidity levels should be kept high within the enclosure. Regular misting of the entire cage contents with room temperature water will be required. The substrate used and the ambient humidity of the room in which the snake is housed will dictate how frequently you will need to spray the enclosure. Typically twice a day is sufficient, although additional humidity may be warranted during the snakes shedding cycle.

[You can use whatever substrate you like] as long as it’s not too wet. Dumerils Boas do NOT require high humidity. In fact of all the species that I keep here in my snake room, I NEVER worry about the humidity for the Dumerils Boas. They always have perfect sheds for me.





So my question is: How do I actually have to keep this kind of snake?

A quick google search shows some basic information about the distribution of Acrantophis dumerili. According to the German Wikipedeia they come from southern Madagascar, where they live in dry tropical forests near water as well as in tropical rainforests, this may be the reason why there are conflicting information about humidity levels.

On the other hand what I found doesn’t differ dramatically, if you keep the average humidity between 50% and 75% you should be OK, the wiki information states the humidity during the night to rise to 85% and higher.

I own a Dumerils Boa. 75% humidity is too high. The humidity should never reach 85%. If you raise it like that, the most likely outcome would be a respiratory infection. The best humidity level for Dumerils Boas is between 50% and 65% and during the shedding process 70% to a maximum level of 75%.

No 40-60% , any higher they will get an RI I have a Dumerils, they are the best

And the person who said you can use whatever substrate you want is crazy, I use paper towels because they drink and pee so much and I keep a clean habitat for all my boys. But if substrate is a must for you ASPEN IS THE ONLY KIND YOU SHOULD USE FOR DUMERILS

40-60% is totally ok, but not during the shedding process. During the shedding process the humidity should not drop below 68% and not to be raised over 75%. Around 70% is the best during the shedding process. The only time my Dumeril shed uncomplete was in a 62% humidity.

High humidity does not cause RI, but it can facilitate opportunities for disease vectors if the enclosure is damp or stagnant.
