Same for gators & rattlesnakes- they are sold as food and their hides are turned into clothing. I abhor the practice and do not eat or wear anything that is of an animal I will not first use as a food source.

Generally, we do not torture an animal (sewing it's mouth shut, removing teeth)for entertainment purposes. This is just wrong.
...really? I have hundreds of examples, but I don't want to open that can of worms

I'm vegetarian and I don't use any animal products as much as I can help it. My dad bought my car with leather interior, so I can't do anything about that, but I personally never buy leather or reptile skin or fur products if I have a better choice.

sorry but i have to disagree

its visitors to their country who pay to see the cobra's who are wrong, imo its them thats the sicko's

as for the poor people sewing the cobra's mouth shut,it may be the only way they have to FEED their FAMILYS

i personally would do whatever it took to feed my kids,if they were starving and i lived in a country with such a crappy support system

we cannot judge these people by our standards,as they live in a completely different way

they don't have welfare food stamps/vouchers or social security like we do in the west...!!

cheers shaun

My point was that we don't kill/torture cattle for entertainment purposes like having snakes mouths sewn shut [for entertainment purposes] in reference to Kyle's statement of there being no difference.

Re: Cobra and Baby

I have a friend who visited India last year and some of the stories he could tell you of the poverty he witnessed would make you weep. I detest animal cruelty in any form, but as Rob and Shaun pointed out, as parents we would and will do anything to protect and care for our children.
Would you rather sew a cobras mouth shut or watch your child starve to death ?
I'm just playing devils advocate here.
Ive just noticed how old the original post is, but i'm new and was trolling :-)

Re: Cobra and Baby

How do you know it's slaughtered Wayne, did it say somewhere? ( sorry I didn't bother reading all the ebay posts )

Lol @ chomper. I couldn't if their death was intentional just for skin.

I don't have to read the ebay advert.

I am well aware of the international Varanus leather trade.

Every year 1000's of monitors are slaughtered for their hides, The market for exotic Varanus leather items is staggering, especially in Europe, where you can purchase cell phone cases made from monitor hides, belts, watches, wallets are all considered "designer goods"

When Daniel Bennett performed his study of 200 stomach contents, where do you think a biologist who loves these animals so much he went to Africa to study them in their natural environment came to get 200 stomachs? He certainly did not just go and kill 200 monitors, he went to the "leather processing plant"

The "Pet trade" is equally brutal, they sell babies in mall stores for $20-35 each and 99% of them are purchased by people who have no flipping idea what they are buying.

Not to mention the "ranching" trade...

Sorry to rant off.....
