Very nice Jeff - that extension of the orange in place of the red seems to be the way these spotted patterns develop. From what I have seen, in virtually all of them, the 'spots' are really areas where the red bands have been reduced to the point where they are absent.
The elongated orange bands - like Roy produced in his selective breeding of the foundation stock with perfect but long triads - have just become longer with more selection in that direction and have eliminted the red bands. Noticed this on your baby from last year and it is even more apparent on the ones from this year.
I have seen some tri-color spotted photos and they are all white with black markings instead of the orange you have here. Have not seen any that are red with black markings. That long neck marking (pushing the first black band backwards) seems to by typical of the extended orange.
Let us know if that is a male, like Roy says - very clean hatchling!!
Congrats - gorgeous babies as always,
mary v.
