Re: Getting an Adult Corn Used to Handling

Yeah I've read it's good to be bitten at least once so you know the feeling and to help ease your mind. Once I got him out of the tank he stopped striking and just tried to escape. Then slowly calmed down. I'm looking forward to working with him now c:

Re: Getting an Adult Corn Used to Handling

I just had my everglades rat out for a brief bit of handling. She had already changed color when I got her last winter, which takes a year or so, and has been eating like a pig and growing quickly since then. I'd say she's around 3' now. She very rarely gets handled, never strikes or bites but simply isn't comfortable about it. Even after a few minutes she still acts flighty and wants to escape, so I let her back into her enclosure. I doubt she was handled much when she was younger, and may never really be calm about it. The most encouraging thing I've seen so far is that she didn't immediately hide when she did go back into her enclosure. I take that as an indication she wasn't too stressed by the handling, and had calmed down somewhat.

Re: Getting an Adult Corn Used to Handling

You know, it may be weird, but my female Russian was always rather shy and "look, don't touch" type. After I bought a second Russian, and they start to be together in one tank she really calmed down, and is more at ease while handling. She still has a terrible feeding response and is trying to attack our hands every single time, but it's better than before for sure.

And yeah, I'm "waiting" for that first bite for 2 years now... shame that it still didn't happen so I sould skip past that "omg i'm so scared when they try to bite" phase.
