I would not use any light at night whatsoever. Some snake species are less susceptable than others but I don't use any light at all. Interestingly the Nobel prize for biology went to a group of scientists who demonstrated the harm done to animals through disruption to circadian rhythms.

As for the amount of water - assuming you have a mesh between the clay balls and the substrate then you can fill the area to about 1/2" (1cm or so) below the top of the layer of balls.
