carpet prices
i am goin to a reptile show in less then 2 weeks- what would be a reasonable amount for a normal baby jcp,coastal,and Irian Jaya.i just need averages-i live in florida. also my cage has the hot end at 98 degrees with a 75 watt bulb would it go down with a 50 watt.98 degrees is really too hot. i know

98F is too hot. 90F on one end and 80F on the other end is what you wan.....nay, what you NEED!!

Light bulbs suck for heating the cage solely, but if you were to use one, I would ask two questions:
1) What are you going to use to heat the cage at night, seeing as Carpets require them temperatures, even when its night time.
and
2) How the heck can we predict what the temperatures will be in YOUR cage, in YOUR house, with YOUR ambient temperatures, with YOUR cage ventilation, etc etc etc?? Answer: we CAN'T.
Light bulbs are CHEAP. If you insist on using one to heat your Carpets (even though they suck) then buy a 25W, a 40W, and a 60W. The damn things are like 30 cents each. Calibrate the temps for YOUR cage. No one here can predict anything that goes on in your setup.
As for your question of whether or not a 50W bulb would give off less heat than a similarily-designed 75W bulb, well, I think that is kind of obvious. LOL! Of course a 50W bulb of the same type will give off less heat. That's intuative. Whether or not it will provide the RIGHT temp range is known only by the Light Gods and those who actually try it.
Bets of luck. My advice? Invest in a $20 heat pad and don't look back.

well i already have a heating pad but that is not enough heat for the day time.it only makes it like 80 degrees and they need a basking spot also i have heard alot of people say that coastals being aggressive is TYPICAL of that carpet_Is this true or are they misinformed

A heating pad that only gets 80F?? Are you sure its on? Most heating pads get TOO hot and need to be dimmed/regulated. I've never seen a heat pad that only gets to 80F on the surface. Or, are you measuring the heat in the air above the pad? Furthermore, how exactly are you measuring the heat?
Coastals are no more aggressive than Jungles or Irian Jayas or Inlands or....etc etc.......

ya as far as heat pads go i have a low/med/high sunbeam heatpad and on low it keeps the surface temp on the hot side at 89-91

Light bulbs do not suck, sorry Jeff. Light bulbs that are not properly calibrated for a specific cage suck. You've been on this "light bulbs suck" thing for as long as I've been on this board, but you are yet to offer one single bit of proof that they are any worse than a heating pad. I, however, can offer proof - a heating pad does NOTHING for ambient temps, whereas a light bulb (which I use to heat ALL of my cages with GREAT success) DOES get ambient air temps to where they need to be. And don't give me any crap about it drying out the air, because again, you're wrong. Put the water dish under the light bulb, and you have a great humidity system.
Carpetfreak - I use 25 watt bulbs in my enclosures, and it gets to 88-90 degrees under the bulb, and about 80 ambiently. The room itself is usually around 78 degrees during the day, 74 at night. Jeff, despite claiming to be anti-light bulb, even though he does use them himself, is right on one aspect though - you have to calibrate the temps for YOUR home. Don't let the ambient temps drop TOO low at night, but I've never once had a problem with ANY snake dropping to the mid-70s at night. For most snakes, this is actually a very natural night time temperature. Good luck with whatever carpet pythons you do decide to buy.
