Re: problem dumeril

had the same problem with my girl....she hadn't eaten since Sept 20 of last year. Tried a bunch of different techniques and tricks, nothing would work. Someone suggested trying a mouse instead of a rat (apparently they give off a stronger scent then rats) and she took it under 30 seconds. And it was smaller then the rats she had been eating before she stopped...7 months and 2 days of stress...relieved is an understatement

i had a few ppl recommend trying live as well, but i've seen way too many pics of snakes shredded by rats and i refuse to go live

i just dont know if i should stick to mice for a while before going back to rats or go back to them right away

Re: problem dumeril

It took both of my Dums about 2 months of weekly offerings before taking their first meal with me. With the real picky one I ended up having to warm the prey with a hairdryer after thawing in warm water, and then snip the skull with scissors. Now he'll take them without the extra processes, however he sometimes will still refuse during shed.

The main concern with feeding live prey to a finicky eater is - as stated above - that the rodent could injure the snake. Also, it can be difficult to switch some snakes from one prey item to another, such as mice to rats. So you may want to stick with rats since they're likely what you'll be feeing into adulthood.

One suggestion I've read is to try offering a f/t immediately following a live feed and eventually switch to just f/t. I would recommend extending feeding intervals a few more days, 5 seems too often for a snake of that size to digest and work up it's appetite again.

Temps and humidity are constant in my enclosures and mine will also have the occasional bad shed. If that's the case, I'll put them in a Tupperware container with a towel soaked in warm water for 15-30 minutes and they're usually able to take care of the remainder of the shed themselves.

Re: problem dumeril

I have a Royal that's a fussy eater, so I start him with a f/t mouse to get him going and once that's down I offer him a large f/t rat and he's on it like white on rice. It's worth a shot
