Thanks! It really is pretty sad, they're too tough for their own good. They last for a few years in crappy conditions and people think its just fine because they're still alive. Its amazing the difference you see in them when you put them in proper conditions.

I do agree with the 5 gallon rule I personally wouldn't put my fish in any less, and you've got a point with 3 to 1.5 thing. :/ Better 5 to 3 than that I guess.

Never heard of New life spectrum though, I take it its not very common to find it in most big box stores? I really don't have any small mom and pop fish stores around here.

New Life Spectrum is carried by a lot of bigger chains. Big Al's for example. It's not any better, IMO, for bettas than the Hikari pellets. New Life Spectrum is formulated for cichlids, and marine fish. Snd there are different formulas reflecting that.
