Re: What to get at reptile expo

here's a bateater (burm x retic) from NERD
Bateater | Reticulated Pythons

here's the colombian x brazilian, from this very forum. I think it looks kinda cool

Didn't I see a show on the fear of this combination happening in the Everglades, creating "Super snake!?" It's beautiful though!

Anyone else have any visual example of this sort of cross-breeding?

Re: What to get at reptile expo

you might have, however what people don't take into consideration is that burms are somewhat hardier snakes than retics. Retics require consistently higher temps year round to survive, temps that florida can provide during the spring, fall and summer, but come winter its difficult. This previous winter was tough on the invasive burmese population, I can't imagine what it did to the retics. In addition, the pairing often produces slugs, however IF the babies make it to breeding age, they would then be able to breed with both regular retics (producing jungle retics) and burms. People are worried about them expanding north of the everglades, but it simply won't happen without consistent global warming resulting in consistently warmer Florida winters.
Bateaters aren't some "super snake" as the sensationalist media would have you believe, they're smaller than retics in length but heavier bodied, but not nearly as heavily bodied as burms.

Re: What to get at reptile expo

I remember hearing the winters are too hard on the snakes for them to thrive, like you said. Does this cross tend to have a more docile temperament of the Burm, or the notorious attitude of the Retic?

Re: What to get at reptile expo

retics really don't have an attitude either, that stems from, for the longest time, retics in captivity were all wild caught. If you speak with many retic breeders they seldom have bad attitudes if they're captive born and bred. But burms ARE more docile, and according to NERD bateaters (their name for the cross) have a similar disposition to Burms.
PS just don't get between a retic and its dinner, you might end up on the menu, they've got an intense feeding response.

Ok, maybe one day I'll be able to get past that then! Attitude or not, they're beautiful.

Re: What to get at reptile expo

I love me some retics, I'm hoping to get an SD morph or two in the next few months.

Re: What to get at reptile expo

I'm personally fond of the carpondro and bateater. But I've never seen a price so I'm assuming they aren't cheap.

Re: What to get at reptile expo

Any other combos I can "Google" for a possible photo? I'm struggling with a combination that would be practical (healthy) and of course beautiful. What would you guys/gals like to see created?

Re: What to get at reptile expo

those are the only ones I know of, I don't know if anything else would work honestly, it would def have to be boa x boa or python x python, but I can't think of anything else that really compliments the attributes of the other species nicely.

Retics are MUCH more hardy then burms, burms are really prone to RIs.

Burms and retics are both considered docile animals, retics are just more active while burms are much slower/lazier.

Re: What to get at reptile expo

Yes I've heard burms need high temps or they will develop ri. But Correct me If I'm wrong but don't retics need higher temps than burms.

Re: What to get at reptile expo

Its about the same, but in 99% of cases, even with bad RIs you can just up the temps and the retics will lose the RI in a few days, its still worth using meds to help them though.
