Hoggies are gettin big!
So do you think there should be a hognose forum on ssnakess.com, all the other forum sites have them, and every other post here seems to be about hogs!

Oh I think there should be! They are rear fanged (or venomous, even if it is only mild) yet they are colubrid! They should have a forum all their own!

Hognoses are not venomous....they have a toxic saliva. The enlarged teeth in the back of their mouths do not inject venom nor do they have venom glands.

Beardonicus,
Hognose snakes possess a "true venom" rich in enzymes and low concentrations of neurotoxins, it is not a "toxic saliva" per se.....
If you are interested in more information you should visit Dr. Bryan Grieg Fry's venom information website or discuss it with him personally, he's a member on this site.
Cheers,
R

Just before xmas I was tryig to decide what kind of snake to get next, and decided upon a western hognose because I hadn't seen many people talking about them and you don't hear about them much. Shortly after I made my decision, hognose posts started popping up all over the place here. Everyone getting them for xmas or looking for them at the next show. So much for picking something different LOL . I think a hognose forum would be great.
E. hognose is still on my list of species to find in Ontario.

Sapphire,
There are no rear-fanged snakes that are completely non-venomous, that would defeat the purpose of having fangs.

ahhhh I wasn't to sure of that!
Thanks for clearing that up. So are SOME rear fanged snakes just less venomous than others?
so maybe a "mildly venomous rear fanged" forum?
