Good Active Boa?

Hello everyone, I am attending Atlanta repticon and am hoping to find a boa to bring home to me I have a ball and a corn right now. But they are almost ALWAYS hiding unless time for feeding, I know they are known for this. Is there any boas that are active and not hiding all the time? Thank you

Re: Good Active Boa?

I have to agree. My boas are active in the early morning, around dusk and feeding days. My carpets are active everyday.
A few people have been steered away from boas to carpets on here lately but boas are cool as well. But yes if you want active get a carpet.

Re: Good Active Boa?

One of my rtb is always out and active but my other rtb is always hiding, its just hit or miss with them. As others have mentions carpets can be very active, however it is more when they are older, babies are very skidish. My young carpet will be out all night but the second I enter the room she goes and hides lol, or trys to launch at me haha

Re: Good Active Boa?

You have a corn and it's not active?
I have boa's and I don't think they are active at all occasionally they pop out usually to get water, move from hot to cold, peeing, poohing, feeding.

I also have a corn and he is really active. I don't own a carpet so I would not know how active they are.

Good luck with what ever snake you buy but please do quarantine.

Re: Good Active Boa?

There are many diurnal colubrids that will cruise around the enclosure during the day such as gopher snakes, garter snakes, etc... Quarantine is very important when adding a new reptile to your collection when you purchase a new snake you want to house it away from the rest of your collection for several months so if your new reptile has any disease or parasites it will not spread to the rest of your collection. It will give you time to treat any parasites and it is always a good idea to get a fecal sample done.

Yes I plan on Quarantine of course. The corn usually is but only at night. I hardly ever see it during the day. its always burrowed around. Do you think I will find one at the show? and around how much?

Re: Good Active Boa?

Reptiles in general aren't out and about, and would rather conserve their energy than use it. Also boas are nocturnal so of you will see activity, it will almost always be at night, depending on the individual snake.

As others have said if you want something a little more active and more out in the open, I'd go with carpet. I've never owned one but I plan on buying a pure coastal later this year.

Boas are nocturnal, so they move around when the lights go out.

Re: Good Active Boa?

Both of my bci's are most active at dusk and dawn. They tend to just hang out in total day or total night.

Re: Good Active Boa?

Carpet pythons are usually readily available. Baby carpets tend to be nippy. I have only met a few that didn't want to bite me repeatedly until they got some size on them. If you are fearful of being bitten, I'd suggest going with a carpet that is at least 2 feet long. That would put it at about a year to a year and a half old. By that time it should be calming down and easier to work with.
