Buying a Jag for a future breeding project
I am looking into purchasing a male Jag for a future breeding project
I know that the jaguar gene is a coastal thing, so i have looked into coastal jags, however there is a stunning Male Irian Jaya Jag available to me as well, the jaya's pattern is considerably stronger than the coastal and i am wondering which one i should go with, i will attach pics soon

Re: Buying a Jag for a future breeding project
It's a personal preference. It also depends on what you will be breeding him with. The pure coastal jags have only coastal blood, so they can be bred into anything. The Irian Jaya jag is a cross between a coastal and an Irian Jaya, and the Jungle-jaguar is a coastal x jungle. The more localities you breed in, the muddier the genetics and the more diluted the individual traits become. If you went with the Irian Jaya jag, I'd suggest breeding it into other Irian Jayas, as that would keep the colors truer and the genetics cleaner. However, this is just my personal opinion- I'm a bit of a carpet python purist. There really isn't any problem as long as you keep track of what genetics the babies will have and label them properly. Also keep in mind that the "purer" the genetics, the more the babies will generally be worth.

Re: Buying a Jag for a future breeding project
Thats what im thinking, the coastal is pure coastal, it is my understanding that the irian jayas are 66% coastal (could be wrong but i believe it is the result of his first 50/50's with another coastal, thats what he did, what percent that is i dont have a firm understanding of yet
it has a gorgeous clean pattern, i will upload images as soon as i go to his place to take em, the coastal jag he is selling is a holdback, but its colors look a little muddy, and as he is the same age as my beautiful jungle girl who after checking is a 100% jungle she just shed, again pics to follow and right now her black is such a soft rich velvty color i wanna pet her all day, but shes had enough stress for the day, took her measure, she is 2 ft 6.75 inches give or take

75% irian jaguar reduced pattern

50% jungle jaguar
willow pretty much has it covered
imo i would only cross an irian jag with another irian jaya or a papa new guinea carpet python
coastal jaguars can be crossed with pretty much any carpet to give you jags and siblings
cheers shaun

Re: Buying a Jag for a future breeding project
forgot to say
always ask if the jags shown any signs of neurological issues
some jags are fine
others can have anything from slight head wobbles to full corkscrew movements around the tank
cheers shaun

Re: Buying a Jag for a future breeding project
A lot of jags do have some mild head wobble. I haven't noticed anything in my girl, but she was very carefully produced. Best bet is to go look at them and see.
