average/typical feeding cost

hey. i am sorta helping a friend who wants a leo, pointing them in teh right direction about certain things since they really dont know much about herps.. Wut i was wondering thoughw as how much does it typically cost to feed a leo. Im not sure because i have a crestie so the cost is lower since they eat fruit as well..i would imagine the cost for a leo would be higher..if you could kinda give an example of how much u spend on food for a single leo in say a month period it would help alot thanks

I spend about $10 including crix, waxworms, mealworms. Crix are cheap at the local petstore 50 cents for a dozen, $5 for 50 waxworms, and $4 for 100 mealworms. $10 is a guess because I have never just had one leo. I have 3 juvies and I spend about $4 a week on crix. It also depends on if the leo is a baby, juvie, or an adult.

well tell yoru friend to get a mealworm and kingworms culture. that will lower teh costs alot.

One leo, say an adult or sub-adult, would need to eat probably every other day. Maybe 10-20 crickets, 20-30 mealies, or 5-10 kings, depending on appetite and size. Most pet stores sell crix for 10 cents each, so that would only be $30/month. Mealies are often cheaper, 300 for $10 out here so about $15/month. Kings are usually 20 cents each so that would be about $30 also Hope this helped. Also, your friend could buy crickets by the 1000 for about $20-$30 from a supplier. He would just need something to keep them in like a tall, thin garbage can. If fed regularily then they would last quite a while. Around here 1000 crix would only last about 2 feedings, plus about 3000 mealies on top of that, so the only way to go is from a supplier

haha thanks guys.. i will definately recommend having the culture of mealworms or something. i have a colony of mealies going so i could tell them wut to do for that, but im not sure if thats something they would want to do. I think bulk would be the best way to go, as long as they have somewhere to keep all the critters.
anyone else have any examples of feeding costs? especially if you only have one leo, or maybe two, would be really helpful

I have just one leo male. He's about 6 months. I probably only spend about $5-6/month on food for him, and he seems to be doing well. One container of mealies (50 in a container) are $1 or 1.25 and last at least a week (well gutloaded). I throw cricks in a few times/month and they are cheap, too.

Herptivite and RepCal Calcium -> $30

Mealworm colony -> I spent about $5 for 500 mealworms to get a colony started, and about $5 - $10 at Bulk Barn and various health stores to get bran and other ingredients for gut loading. This is enough to last for years.

About $2 or so every month for crickets/waxworms/silkworms etc. I am currently trying to raise my own waxworms.

I started out buying bulk mealworms, but the work was the same as keeping my own colony. Hope this helps.

Basically the same as above. I haven't needed to buy mealworms for over a year. I throw in crickets when I want to watch them chase stuff around. Maybe 5 per week. Comes to about $3 per month for my 2 leos. This isn't counting calcium suppliments and stuff, but a little goes a long way.

I usually buy large amounts of mealworms and superworms from worm man worm farm. But, there is also a reptile package and a bird package (various worms, no crickets) that you can buy at rainbow mealworms online. For $10.00 US you get 100 crickets, 200 mealworms, 50 waxworms, and 25 superworms. I would imagine that would last one leo a while. The bird package is minus the crickets, with more mealworms, more superworms, and the 50 waxworms. That $10.00 is including shipping, btw.

to avoid waste and expense I'm starting a roach (B. dubia) colony, left over veggies and occassional left over dry catfood make feeding them cheap (single so buying fresh veggies used to make for too much waste as they went bad).

I apy about 10 for just leopard geckos I have 5 of them

I order 1000 mealworms which is $15 about everymonth and about $10 worth of cickets a month, I have 5 leopard geckos

I paid about $25 for both Herptivite and RepCal, comes up to around $30 with taxes. ($15 for Herptivite, $10 for RepCal)
