how do I find out......

How do I find out what herps are legal to keep in the states???

Contact city hall. It differs from municipality to municipality. There is not an overall law for what you can and cannot keep in the country, its the individual cities that have their own bylaws. Do not conatact the Humane Society, they may pass out bunk information... they are not friendly to the hobby. You may be able to find info online is you run a search through google as well.

Be careful, your municipal code may vary from your state laws, and you may find out that the herps you already have are illegal to own. Once you start talking to "government" type folks, you may open yourself up to all sorts of problems. I would do my search on the internet and keep far away from the bureaucrats.

Your state should have a website. Also, the State Universities are a good source of info, specially if they have a cooperative extension program. Also, any state herp societies would be pretty up to date on state laws.

You can go to your states Fish and Wildlife or Fish and Game site and there should be a list.

Native Venomous: No permit required for less than 5 specimens of each species

Exotic Venomous: No permit required

Protected Native Venomous: Permit required
