Question JCP temperament?

I've just come to realize that I really, really like JCP's but have usually heard they're the most moody of all the Carpets. I currently have a IJCP and she's only a little snappy (usually a feeding response) in her enclosure but once she's out, she' fine.

I've heard a lot of myths and misconceptions about various species and wonder if the "aggressive JCP" is one of them or if they really are buttheads.

Re: JCP temperament?

I only have one so not a good quantity to make a general judgement but he is a butthead

The shop i buy from sells lots of carpets and the staff all say that the jcps tend to be the most aggressive of any of the snakes they stock, if that helps

Re: JCP temperament?

about 50% of all the jungles i've kept were bitey,i have had between 10 to 12 jungles

even the ones that were not biting all of the time, had a nip at me every now and then, imo usually because i moved too fast or startled them

based on my own experiences with jungles,i would say they are definatly the most agressive of the carpets

that said you do get placid jungles

cheers shaun

Re: JCP temperament?

imo all carpets are capable of having a strike at you, they usually react to being startled or fast hand movents

right now i have only 2 carpets that are biters, thats a jungle and a female irian,my male irian gets a bit bitey for 24 hours after feeding

imo you really have to base it on,how you find each individual snake,so go look at a few and see what their temprements are like

in time you will learn to read your carpet, each of them have their own traits

cheers shaun

Re: JCP temperament?

My Jungle Carpet Python has never struck out of aggression or defense. I had 2 feeding response bites a couple years ago while he was young but both were my fault. I had my JCP at an expo last weekend being handled by kids off and on the whole time.

Re: JCP temperament?

My adults are both mega tame and we let some pretty young kids handle them. My 4 month olds are nippy and one is a chainsaw. Full on attack at my hand as soon as I put it in his viv. BUT!! I know they will both chill out in a few months. IMHO I think its great to go through the nippy period. You will learn to read your snake like a book when they are to small to even break the skin. Invaluable when they are adults. Again IMHO if you like jcps get one and go through the nippy stage together. Its really not all that bad.

Re: JCP temperament?

I don't mind the hatchling nippy stage, I just didn't want a large adult that wants me dead at all times. I had a Nicaraguan boa who got worse with age. She just hated my guts.

I don't mind the occasional snapping but I just didn't want a snake who wanted to kill me 24/7.

^ That is one thing I love about my GTP he is always looking to take another shot at biting me. He has yet to get me though.

Diamond husbandry is different from all other carpets

they only get fed 6 months of the year, one of the first thing i learned was " a fat Diamond is a Dead Diamond "

Diamonds require yearly cooling cycles from their 2nd year onwards,i give mine,2 to 4 hours with a 90F basking spot, then no more heat until the next day

i give mine night time drops of 55F during their cooling cycle

all the other carpet sub species are easy to keep.....

Diamonds being kept incorrectly can end up with Diamond Python Syndrome, this causes bones to go brittle and break, there is no cure and death, will be slow and painfull, unless the snake gets euthinized

cheers shaun

Re: JCP temperament?

So, no Diamond Pythons then. LOL I would stress so bad if I ever kept one... No thanks, haha.

I'm gonna look at some Jungles at the next expo at the end of the month.
