I should not have went there today

Because I cannot get bonny little Gretchen out of my mind!

So I stopped at Jungle Critters to pick up a brick of coconut hair for one of my snakes, and sitting there on the shelf is this beautiful Sav girl in a damn 20 gallon fish tank, with dry bark chips, a screen top and a big 200 watt basking lamp.

They are asking $79.99 for the monitor alone, the sign on the front said "My name is Gretchen, please don't touch me I bite" Well of course she bites, the conditions they are keeping her in are just aweful, no room to move around, too much heat and not enough moisture.

I have dealt with this place before, so pointing out ANYTHING is a waste of time.

She looked so depressed sitting in there, nowhere to hide, stuck shed all over, no humidity at all, it just rips my guts out.

Rant over....

what if you printed out the care sheet and just left it on top of her cage there? maybe an employee would pick it up and read it..... just thinking, its worth trying, right?

The owners are sisters, no employees, and the last time I tried (Last year), they kicked me out screaming at me "Don't you think we know what we are doing?? get out!"

Did that last year too, SPCA only cares about hairy animals, reptiles and fish don't count. (to them anyways)

Just print it and as you walk by, casually drop it on the cage and leave it there and walk out. They'll hopefully read it in their own time. No one likes to be told (especially owners of a pet store) that what they're doing is wrong. Leaving the care sheet might be a more subtle way to get to them and maybe they'll make the changes necessary. IDK, I think it's worth trying. I'd do it.

Do you have room for two savs?

Skip that cause they will just bring another one in.

It really breaks my heart to read this, and even more to say this, but you should let her die. They may one day get it in their heads if the animals they're selling don't make it.

Seriously though, I hate myself for saying that.

BB that is a good Idea but some other person will end up purchasing and killing her. While the pet shop just gets another poor baby in.

Re: I should not have went there today

Was just talking more about this cycle and something occurred to me that made me think more positively about it. They used to sell puppies and kittens this same way here but had to stop a while back. Now you can only get birds, fish and reptiles. With all the bans going into place regarding exotics, perhaps it just wont be worth it for pet stores to sell reptiles anymore. Maybe, like larger mammals, you will only be able to get them from specialized breeders.

There also seem to be fewer pet stores now and more pet supply stores, so hopefully that is the way things are moving.

That is just so sad, Wayne I just don't understand why people let their own personal pride get in the way of providing the proper care for an animal

Re: I should not have went there today

For pet stores the dollar is the bottom line. I don't care if it is mom and pop or a large chain. It is understandable, why go in to business if not to make money off of the ignorant populace. I am not saying I agree with it, but people are people and it is what it is. You do what you can Wayne. (Personally I hope you buy her,) But someone told me on these forums, you can't save them all.

Re: I should not have went there today

horrible
The part that i do not understand is in these store`s im pretty sure they have everything right there to fully take care of the animal`s yet they keep them like this?

the sav at the pet shop near me called nature. has a pretty decent setup. 6'x6' tank on a earth substrate and log`s to climb on
i will take a pic next time im there for you!

Re: I should not have went there today

they sold the boa at the pet store near me so they converted his huge tank into a sav tank, its a pretty sweet setup, probably 8x4' with proper humidity etc etc.

i wish all pet stores were owned by those people not the stupid money-only people. sigh.
