Carpet Pythons
I am planning on purchasing one of the smaller breeds of Carpet Python within the next year, probably an Irian Jaya, and would like to know all I can before I buy it. What type of lighting, what type of substrate, hides, climbing opportunities, cage size etc... I currently have a 30"x12"x18" I think that I am planning to keep it in to begin with. Anything you guys can tell me will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Carpet Pythons
Lighting:
anything that will let you view it and provide a photoperiod.
Substrate:
Not sand.... newspaper, aspen, bark etc.
Hides:
Yes, preferably in an arboreal placement, just big enough so the snake fits in there tight. You can use what ever you want from an old shoe box, little wooden bird house to the fancy rock looking hides.
Climbing opportunities:
Provide plenty of branches to perch on
Cage size:
4x2x2 as a standard but I personally provide my carpets a more arboreal set up.

Re: Carpet Pythons
Thanks. Is the 4x2x2 for a full grown snake? Will my cage be reasonable for a juvenile?

Yeah full grown in the 4x2x2... I guess it would be OK, I put my juvies in tubs so might have to wait for a definitive answer on that one from other carpet keepers on here.

Re: Carpet Pythons
You can put a young one into an adult viv BUT if it wont eat in there then i would go back to a smaller tub, mine went straight into a big viv and has never missed a meal.

generally they are fine Rob, apart from a few very rare exceptions, the more space you give them the better they like it

Re: Carpet Pythons
4x2x2ft tank
plenty branches,hides and fake plants
ceramic bulb, bulb guard and a thermostat (for heating)
a thermometer
a water bowl
and your good to go mate
as long as a hatchling isn't a nervous feeder, they will do just fine going straight into a 4x2x2ft tank, that will do them all their adult life
i give all my carpets seasonal temperatures and night time lows
cheers shaun

Re: Carpet Pythons
OMG I'm so confused? Kyle has a brother?? or are you a cousin?? With a first name that starts with K as well.. or are you Kyle as well XD bahaha
I couldn't tell you enclosure size as I do use the rack system myself (much easier I find).
And I agree with the above statement... "Is there such a thing as a Carpet Python that won't eat?"
My girl serafina is a glutton.. I could have just fed her, an hour later open the tank to check on her, instant feed mode. The next day I check on her, instant feed mode.. the moment I open her tub she's ready to eat lmao

My IJ girl went off food for 47 days. She was in a 15 qt hefty storage container for 4 months with lots of hides, a perch, etc and was initially feeding. Downsizing her to a 6 qt did the trick to get her going again. Some are just weirdos.

yup, this is my brother, also K. Miller, same with my mom and dad. We have 4 K. Millers in my family, 3 of us work in the same building, gets fun sometimes.
This is when I began to convince him that carpet>ball (royal)
