Ever hear of....?

Sloworms ? A native lizard over here in Blighty. Looks a little like a snake until you look at it`s face. They eat worms and various creepy crawly type things. They can detach thier tail like some other lizards so I don`t touch, I just look. I used to spend days on end looking for these guys when I was a kid! That`s where it all started.... The humble Sloworm They get to about ten inches or so, this one is a baby and it`s female I think, the males have blue flashing along the flank. I could have that the wrong way around mind you, it`s been a while! I saw this little guy when I was out on a photoshoot at my local wildlife reserve. I live just on the edge on it...

He looks like he`s actually let his tail go recently too, there`s no tip... It grows back though

Cool looking! It does look like a snake you can't see the legs.

Re: Ever hear of....?

Never seen one in person.

Spent a month in the UK once, and never got to go herping. Everywhere I went was way too populated, Only time I saw any places that would have any herps we were moving on public transportation.

Had really wanted to see one of these.....(A Natrix grass snake)

Re: Ever hear of....?

I`ve never seen one mate and I`ve spent thirty odd years actually going out of my way to find one! If you were in the right place, maybe Scotland or deepest Wales you might find one I suppose. Adders seem to be more prevelant than those guys, I`ve seen planty of Adders. Those are the only venomous reptile we have over here. I once climbed Cheddar Gorge with no safety gear. I got to the top, hanging on by my eye brows (and that`s no exaggeration) then realised not only was I in serious danger of falling the 600ft to the bottom, I was also absolutley surrounded by little Adders! Babies I suppose. Beautiful they were! There was an angryu looking mountain goat waiting for me at the top too, very silly thing to do indeed. Brought home to me a week later when someone else attempted what I`d done and was killed

Oh and Marveldude, they actually have no legs, it`s a legless lizard type deal lol But the face gives them away because they have eye lids....

Re: Ever hear of....?

It's the same. There's over 80 forms of legless lizards. I see them in pet store at 3 to 4 times a year. Here's a link Legless Lizard

and another link Glass Lizard Page

Re: Ever hear of....?

During warm weather we get a few slow worms in the house every day - bloody cats love bringing them into the kitchen and then (if we are lucky) just leaving them there - often they haven't even dropped their tails.

If you want to see lots of slow worms just have a compost heap with plenty of cut grass in it (or an overgrown garden like mine ) If you lift up about 6 - 12 inches of the cut grass toward the middle of summer you should have a nice family of Slow worms in there.

They were one of the things i tried to "keep" in my bedroom cupboard as a kid.

Re: Ever hear of....?

Oh right! lol Your cats wear gumshields then? lol I used to have a cat like that, she liked to catch things but wouldn`t ever hurt them. Apart from a poor little shrew she actually scared to death that is. Cor I haven`t thought about her in years.....

Re: Ever hear of....?

The female likes to *catch* worms and worm-like creatures, she doesn't harm them just licks the dirt of and presents them to the family as a gift :P

The boy however is a completely different story, he kills/eats about 90% of what he catches. Unless of course I catch him in stalk mode and run after him. I've saved two moles this way before they've been harmed
