Need some opinion on a capture method
A manager at a petco near my house said to buy a mouse, kill it, and cut it so that some blood will come out and that the red tail will be attracted to the blood. she then said to place the mouse in a small animal carry case (which i have already) and that he will hover around the case trying to break it open. Anyone think its worth a shot?

Re: Need some opinion on a capture method
I am amazed that PETCO of all places did not try and sell you a frozen mouse before suggesting that you kill a live one.

Re: Need some opinion on a capture method
I'm amazed that petco didn't try to sell you a ball python, a hundred feeder crickets, a screen top aquarium, cedar substrate, and a uv bulb instead of offering legitimate advice.

Re: Need some opinion on a capture method
it might work i would use a frozen mouse myself but it is worth a shot. it wouldn'y be the blood they are attracted too. you are not trying to catch a shark but the smell of a brained mouse might draw him out

Re: Need some opinion on a capture method
Wrap the frozen/thawed mouse in kitchen towel (something not TOO absorbent) and over turn a spoon so that one of the edges is about halfway across the mouses skull - hold the spoon steady with one hand and hit the spoon with the other as if crushing a garlic clove. Brains them pretty well and any "mess" is contained. Open up the kitchen towel and place it inside whatever you are trying to catch the snake in. The towel will help to spread the smell required.

Re: Need some opinion on a capture method
yep, braining it usually works pretty well, some snakes are just too stubborn but for the most part, it works well lol

Re: Need some opinion on a capture method
I brained a mouse once and I really don't know if I could ever do it again. Jamming a pin into a mouse skull was fairly horrific for me. If I did i would have to use headphones to avoid the sound and use something to hit the pin with instead of just pushing it in to avoid the feel. Anyway, after my lovely description I suggest you do it haha. Sorry.

Re: Need some opinion on a capture method
cut its skull with a really sharp knife and you avoid the feel, cover it like Rob said and you solve the looking at it. but i totally agree that braining a mouse is almost a nauseating feeling

Re: Need some opinion on a capture method
i brain mine with a pair of plyers.wrap head in kitchen towel then squeeze.i would then put brained item in a hessien sack.leave the sack some where quiet and warm near where you think the snake may be.prop open 5 or 6 inches of the sack.repeat this every night with a fresh food item.you could even put a heat mat under the sack but ALWAYS USE A THERMOSTAT.hope you find him soon
cheers shaun

i use plyers rob i dont think i could do it with my bare hands and a spoon.the feeling of it would freak me out.its bad enough feeling it through the plyers.
i am currently having to scent rat fuzzies with a burst rat pup to get 2 of my carpets onto fuzzies.this is the first time ive ever had to do this and its gross to say the least.
the things we do for our snakes eh .....!!!
cheers shaun
