biggest snake species in history??

what is the biggest snake species that ever lived? im talking even ones from the fossil record that have long been extinct. have there ever been any super giant snakes or are what we have now the biggest they have ever been?

While giant dinosaurs roamed the earth, snakes were basically the same size as they are now. The longest prehistoric snake was the python-like Giganthopis garstini, which inhabited what is now Egypt about 38 million years ago. Parts of a spinal column and a small piece of jaw discovered in Fayum, in the Western Desert, indicate a probable length of some 11m (36ft|).

That's right. Also some ancient liasis species were found over 10 meters long. Some say that a giant anaconda-like snake exists in the Amazon jungle. Black, with horns, some over 25 meters long, but if such creatures existed we would know by now.

I saw a show on Discovery some time back where they were talking about these so called 'giant' snakes that exist today. There are some parts of the amazon that have yet to be explored, 'or so they say', and there have been geographical and topographical survey pictures taken by satelite. The pictures showed S shaped, or squigly lines that theorists believe to be these 'giant snakes'. Whether or not this is true, I dont know. It seems to me that if such a snake existed, there would be evidence by now. However, we DO NOT know everything about the planet that we live on. For example, there was the dead fish that was brought up by a fisherman in the Mediteranian some years back that was believed to have been extinct for millions of years. It was considered an 'anomolie', until they found a couple live ones swimming around since.
There are new species being dicovered every year, and who knows, we may still find things that will totally blow our mind in the future.

JimmyDavid - as far as extinction goes, humans can only be so sure... the ceilacanthe (excuse the spelling, please) is a relatively large fish that was thought to be extinct for decades before some were discovered... still living and reproducing. You never know...

It sure is interesting to think of the possibility of a giant snake being found out there. But somehow i don't think it's gonna happen. A small creature could avoid humans for a long time and remain unknown but a gigantic snake like that would be in trouble trying to hide

with how stupid man kind has been we have destoryed more in 100 years than mother nature has in a 1000 ,I hope we don't find any large snakes in the world becouse thay will only kill it in the name of sicence than who knows if there are more out there?? just my two cents worth Paul

My thing is, if thier are giant snakes out there, then what makes you think we should have found them by now. I mean, it had to avoid humans and other preditors to get large. So I just think that if thier are giant snakes, they have learned to hide very well.

before 1week i seen a documentary on animalplanet about anacondas and they told that now we can not find a really big anaconda because they had killed...

There are many species we will never know even existed, there are many new species still to come.

Besides the amazon is crazy. Its like massive trees and thick understory with natural caves and caverns. Ofcourse they destroy like 500 acres a day on average or something scary like that. Sorry for the bad stats from memory, but I know it's constantly being destroyed.

I have no doubts though, that the rainforests even now hold many mysteries that man has yet to uncover, including animal species.

when i think about the des6truction of the rainforest i see this picture in my head of all of it gone but the very last acre and all the animals that are left trying to pack themselves in this last acre and it really saddens me. maybe one day something will be done to save this wonderful ecosystem. i hope so anyway...
