liasis taxonomy?

Hey all,

After realizing I loved several liasis species, I did some web searching to find out how many and which liasis species there are. Unfortunately I've run into some conflicting information. For instance, I've seen children's python listed as liasis childreni on some sites (isn't it antaresia or some such genus?). I've seen the Savu python (sometimes called Sawu?) listed both as Liasis Savuensis and Liasis Mackloti Savuensis.

Anyone know what the latest word on liasis taxonomy is, or where I can find the definitive source on it?

As a side note, what are the capitalization conventions for writing genus species and subspecies?

thanks,
rg

Taxonomy's confusing and really there isn't a right answer... just the answer that the big shots like... and even they don't always agree.

I normally go with what the EMBL Reptile Database has to say when I decide what names to use.

http://www.embl-heidelberg.de/~uetz/LivingReptiles.html

The pythons section of the species listings is

http://www.embl-heidelberg.de/~uetz/...es/Boidae.html

I agree with CamHanna. We also use the EMBL when we need to look up taxonomy information. It is current and accurate as far as I can tell.

Antaresia used to be liasis as did leiopython, apadora, bothrochilus and morelia boeleni.

Send a message via ICQ to Liasis
Hi,

Have a look at www.liasis.net
however, the liasis macklotti savuensis is not longer a subspecies of liasis macklotti. But thats only a smal critic.
