Too paranoid?
When is paranoid too paranoid. A while back I was discussing with some hot keepers for my ideal setup I would have a seperate building with double locking doors (the inside one thick glass so you can see anything roaming free). I was told I was too paranoid and this would be dangerous. I don't see how having extra security precautions is dangerous. Can anyone explain this to me?

I think I'm with you on this one -- better safe than sorry, right? Double locking doors sounds fine to me. Now, TRIPLE locking doors might be going a bit far... lol

A snake room with locking door and locked enclosures are fine for anything you would want to keep.....

I lock my herps behing doors as well. Can never be to careful. Eventually you will have company over, someone to come in and fix appliances when your not home, etc,etc... I think it is the unresponcible folks that would not include locks in their collection. I do not use a seperate building, just a seperate room. A friend of mine even has the lightswitch to his room on the outside of the room, that way he has light BEFORE he opens the door to a dark room. Never know when something just may get out and be waiting for ya behind it.
I guess it is up to you how you want it basically. Although, if you strive to be "to safe" , I would hate to see ya lower your defences or be to controlled to follow everything through.

My hots are in locking cages in a locking room with a locking hall way leading to it. all with door jams on the bottoms os nothing gets out.
I recently built a hot room for a friend of mine and even installed a large 6x4 window sohe or others could look in before entering for safety.
When it comes to HOTS their is never enough safety precautions to be taken. I even know of a few that have video cameras set up in it the room with light weight objects placed in key areas so if an escape happens they will know about it.

I don't think I would complain if I had a secondary glass door to look through before entering my hot room.

You can never be too cautious and what you describe does not sound like overkill to me. When it comes to hots you just can't be overly careful. However I believe that you can safely and ethically keep hots in any locked escape proof room. I keep my stuff in a locked room and then all the tanks are in individually locked cabinets.

Security is something that you can never have too much of when your dealing with venomous snakes. Your plan sounds good. The bare minimum that I would feel comfortable with is locking cages within a sealed and locked room.

Living in an old (100+ years) house I figure it's easier to make a building away from the house that's escape proof.

Like my dad always told me, "There is no doing like Overdoing"
In my opinion, when it comes to dangerous animals, too much is almost enough.

personally I think that those people who said to you that you are paranoid are stupid. They are the once who leaving their gard down. You are on the other hand very smart. Keeping hots is a dangerous buisness and you can never be safe enough. So keep your plans and try to be as safe as possible and don't listen to people when they say that you are being paranoid.

Absolutely no such thing as too paranoid when it comes to hots.
A hot room should have lockiing enclosures, and both entry doors should be locking, preferably both doors with wire reinforced windows. I say both doors because I am a firm believer in a double entry system, similiar to that used with aviaries. Also a proper hot room should include battery powered emergency lighting. But hey, maybe I am paranoid....
